Pentax SMC 500mm F4.5 on a K1

Can anyone offer advice how to set a K1 to accept an SMC 500mm F4.5. I've played with the settings and still get a flashing F in the display!

You will always see the F-- display, so that's normal. Here are the full instructions for the settings and metering procedure:

TLDR: allow use of the aperture ring via a custom function, put the camera in M mode mode, and press the green button before taking each photo.

Custom menu 4: menu item 26: Allow aperture ring...set to allow

The camera will not recognise the aperture but you will be able to use stop-down metering with the green button in Manual exposure mode, or Av mode at f4.5 only.

It's also possible to use Av or TAv with this lens since there's no aperture lever. It's just a bit more convenient than the green button and should yield the same result ( in Av mode, anyway).
