Cropping K-1 images

I'm still amazed with the crop capability of the K-1II.

Here's two examples. The first, a very ordinary lens, hand held and the second, tripod and pixel shift. Roughly the same amount of crop.

Agree. Very nice. What I wish is if you had a K-3 II or a KP to put that same lens on to add into the mix when you shot those. I wonder if you would out resolve the lens with the higher pixel density or if you'd pull even more detail out - would the crop part of the K-1 II still win? I have a lot of fun performing silly testing like this, and it often leads to some interesting learning, e.g. my Pentax AF 1.7x adapter on my K-1 II is a plus, but I might as well upscale in software and crop on my K-3 II.

Its one of the great things about the K-1 for sure. I often recover a decent image with a significant crop and you would rarely know its a crop (unless you are printing very large prints).

If there is lots of light the K3 is better with the denser pixels. But as soon as iso gets higher the advantage disappears. I'm finding the effective reach of the K1 is longer than the K3 with the same long lenses. Mostly due to better noise characteristics.

Ah yes! Would be a fun test to do, but I only have a K5 to test with, and it's not a patch on a K-3II or a KP!

I've done some crops similar in size to yours, shared the cropped HD image with my phone, the image crop from the K1 still looks better on phone display than the same image taken with the phone itself.

An image taken in desert with 5D Mark IV and 70-200mm f4L IS lens.

Settings: 1/80, ISO 100, f8, 200mm, hand held. With the available conditions: sand carried by wind, hot air even at sunset and given the fact that I've taken the shot at 1/80s and 200mm, I think the results are pretty good. There are details in the sand dunes, people are recognisable... The image is not edited, is just converted from RAW to JPEG in Photoshop with landscape profile applied.

and the crop image from the above one (final image 1400x933px).

But, for people who print very large, K1 has 3 advantages that I'm sure it counts when comes to extra details in files:
1. 36mp sensor
2. lack of AA filter (or, to be more precise, the option to enable or disable AA depending on what you shoot)
3. pixel shift

Add to the above 3 advantages the very good dynamic range, astrotracer and some other nice features and you get a landscape camera that is hard to ignore end very hard to beat at a very good price compared to competition.

In-spite of the resurgence of full frame (24x36) , and very high quality of full frames images, it still isn't matching medium format for big enlargements / commercial works. I still believe that 24x36 is not more than a reportage format, as it always was, where versatility is essential.
