Watercolor digital filter

(RAW images still residing in memory card) ...Blacks are completely washed out with white; dark blues and browns are near completely washed out with white and the couple of tweaks through the Info button has no effect as the washout is pre-any adjustments. Any known remedies? Thank you.

What are you trying to ask? Were you using a specific setting? If so what settings, and where is a jpg of the RAW file? more information is needed.

Confirm that custom image is not set to muted or flat (User manual, page 66)? Accidental changes are not uncommon on some Pentax dSLRs due to the position of the > button on the 4-way controller. The setting is applied to instant preview as well as the preview JPEGs included in the DNG/PEF files. Because of this and the size shape of my hands, I have my K-3 set to "forget" the custom image setting between power cycles (User manual page 103).

Hey thanks. I'll give that a go as your suggestion is of good reason.

Hi Steve. Took your advice and poked around with the custom image settings and their parameter adjustments. I have the firmware 1.51 however, this watercolor filter just does not recognize blacks and has difficulty with dark blue. See my comment and photos submitted to Adam. However, in the poking...oddly the better custom image is the Muted with parameters all at default with the exception of Tone of which Blue works best followed by red...go figure. Anyways the quality of picking up some blacks is noticed but still lacking. The pics supplied to Adam are not of the Muted custom images.

Regards.

OK! I finally got it!

Yours is not a troubleshooting request for problems with image capture; instead, it is a question regarding the "digital filter" feature available from image review for special effects in-camera processing of images saved to the card. I can honestly say this is the first thread in some twelve years being active on the Pentax Forums regarding this little-used feature or any of the filters offered. I, personally, have never given any of these a try before this morning!

I just did a test run of the Water Color filter with my K-3 and your results in the second pair of example images are consistent with my results. The filter appears to be working properly for you, though the options for modification are limited. The somewhat "posterized" look with few middle tones is part of the filter's effect.

Remedies? What is used for input will determine what you get in the end, so that may offer some options, though I have my doubts. If you want more control, a similar "filter" might be available as a Photoshop plug-in or bundled into editing tools from Corel and other vendors.

Steve
