I put my D FA 150-450 lens on my K1-II and it would not calibrate. Installed my D FA 28-105 and it calibrated right off.
I calibrate without large lenses because thus it's easier to turn and pan the camera with the required movements. I don't think that a lens has to be attached to calibrate.

Correct. I would be concerned if it were a lens that had one of the DC motors in it or if you were dealing with lenses with magnetic materials but for aluminum or plastic bodies lenses there shouldn't be an issue. I do it this way and haven't had a problem. You can even do it without a lens attached which I do after finding that the calibration wasn't' good enough and have to take the camera off the 400mm lens.

With 600mm focal length (telescope) and 30s exposure time I managed to take photos without star trails and on one I found the ring nebula.

See here. Scroll down: Pentax Astrotacer - round stars with long exposuretimes
This is a very informative page regarding the astrotracer. I found it to be very helpful as I just recently purchased a Pentax K-70. I will be testing other lenses for sure. Thanks for the link.
