Pentax has 35 CDAF AREAS. Points not mentioned. Adam should ask at Photokina. (If he is going).

No contrast and phase detect points = no hybrid AF.
CDAF is CDAF

How embarrassing would it be if the sensor/tech in the camera didn't match the press release? I'll be sure to investigate at Photokina.

Until then, I have a reviewer testing the K-70, and the PLM lens is expected soon.

There is an answer from Photokina from Ricoh's representative - Hybrid AF works only in video mode, no any Hybrid AF for photo shooting. LV - common contrast AF.

The technology exists on the sensor, but the firmware limits it to video.

While I suspect that it is possible that it may be unlocked in the future, I doubt it.

Why? Not good to have an entry level camera with a live view focus better than the K-1. It was likely restricted by the marketing team when internal testers pointed this out.

So it's more proof of concept so that a future flagship can use it along with the 27 PDAF points.

That said, I am really enjoying my K-70. Wish I could use Hybrid AF for stills, but I am still very satisfied and recommend this camera.

It is also possible that the contract with Sony has certain limitations to prevent Pentax from competing with Sony's products.

It is a serious flaw for the use of the K-70 for stills in liveview. They should repair this via firmware. The K-70 is in no way competition for K-1.

I don't believe anyone claims otherwise.
