On Uncle Vanya's recommendation I searched for the cheapest K100d that I could find on Ebay. I then re-drafted the instructions following a few messages back and fourth with UncleVanya and posted them on the forum. I've successfully converted my 50-135 to screw drive from a failing SDM and back again (because it was still working slowly). As the weather cooled the SDM became worse so I converted it back to screw drive and have enjoyed it immensely ever since. Now just recently I bought a 16-50* for a fantastic price. Its SDM still works well so maybe I won't need to convert it but if I do, I know I can. Bonus, recently my wife has shown an interest in photography. She now uses that K100d for macro photography. It's old and simple and she likes it that way. The whole process has enabled me to buy the two flagship lenses (50-135 and 16-50) for far less than even one would cost new. As per his post above, the K-5 will probably work if you can borrow one from a friend but the still sell too high just to use for a one time lens conversion. So your choices are to:
- send it to UncleVanya for the conversion,
- buy a cheap K100d and do it yourself, or
- borrow a K-5 or earlier body to do the conversion. Probably a K20d and other bodies will work as well.
No harm will come to the camera body by using it to convert a lens even if you do something wrong. However if you do something very wrong you can damage the lens.
