Workaround 4GB/25' video limit?

Is there a way to either increase the max filesize/video time limit when shooting on the K70? I thought this was a FAT32 filesystem restriction, but I doubt that exFAT Or NTFS formatting would work when you plug the card back into the camera.

Has anyone tried reformatting as different filesystem?

Is there a way to set video to immediately begin shooting another file when maximum is reached?

I was reminded of this limitation the hard way and not quite sure how much footage i lost...

Ciao Emirena.

I don't have your camera (I don't shoot video) and I'm not 100% sure, but I think that between reaching the capacity of the card or after a limit set by the software

there is an interval period that can't be filled, you could fix it with two out of phase cameras so that you can edit the movie later.

I have read on the Ricoh website the recording limits of the K70.

Valid values for Pentax K70

Recording time: Up to 25 minutes or 4GB; automatic recording stop with internal temperature too high.

Ciao Mario

The 25 minute limit is set to avoid a higher tax in the European Union. Dedicated video cameras have, I think, triple the tax that an SLR shooting video is taxed.

Outside of formatting with your camera I wouldn't suggest using anything else except a program called SD Formatter on a computer. It leaves the protected partition needed for camera use intact.

If you attach the camera to HDMI out where you will record the ’lv’ it will be 1080 HD. Set camera display to show no info and use MF(white box will dissapear). You’ll still have some info at the top, but if you crop it to 16:9 no one will be able to tell then you will have as long as camera has battery to record. I’v used this way. There is no clean HDMI out, but it is as good as it get with Pentax. You’ll have to record sound also externally...which is a bummer. Using image capture device is needed also. I used minirecorder from black magic.

But you did not ask if it is practical, you did ask if it is possible.

This seems the simplest test to do, but if Pentax has hardwired the 25' limit I don't feel much hope of success. I would have just used the windows partition management utility to reformat, thanks for the SW recommendation!

Really I just was hoping there would be a way to set the camera to begin recording a second video after the first completes... even missing a couple seconds.

I'm using this to shoot climbing footage so HDMI out in a forest or on a trail is not happening but audio is relatively unnecessary - even though the built in recording function works quite well on the k-70 unless there's wind, of course!

So you're shooting it unattended, is that your specific use case?

That is what I am talking about not doing, not the 25 min limitation. If one wants their sd cards to function properly then using Windows formatter is exactly what one doesn't want to do on a card meant to be used in a camera. Hence my suggesting using the software developed by the SD Card Association if one needs to format using a computer.
