K-70 and 18-135mm street photography

I've been thinking of this combination for a while. There's not much it cannot do.

Awesome combination for everyday carry!

Are you familiar with this long running appreciation thread of the DA 18-135mm WR?

Yes, indeed I am. It's just so lovely to see someone using a DSLR for street photography, together with the 18-135, as so many people use small primes. I'm usually a bit trepidatious when it comes to street photography; I prefer small forms of camera and lens so I'm usually in awe of people who just go out there and use this particular combination.

I wandered (circa 2010) around Morocco and Venice with my Canon 450D and a zoom having no idea what I was doing was labelled as "street photography" and without a second thought.
Nowadays I use my KP and the 20-40 or a prime (once I tried the 55-300plm but that just felt weird).

That was interesting. I myself have done some street photography. As he mentions there’s a lot of difference between shooting with a zoom and shooting with the wide primes. The zoom allows you more ability to be unseen by your subjects. He also directly approached some people which I have done also. I liked the video overall, I think in a city that size a zoom makes a lot more sense than in say NYC. The density of people matters as well as the size of the sidewalks and area of the interaction.

Never had much luck with street photography - inconvenient vehicles and humans keep obscuring the view.

Reminds me of shooting in Niagara Falls or Algonquin Park.....
Isn't there going to be a comment about soft edges in the long end? The nay sayers are falling down on the job.

I’d say with that kind of photography the edges being less sharp on the long end isn’t a negative. I’ve used the 18-135 on four Pentax bodies (k-50 & k100D Super to start, k-3, and now KP) it’s highly versatile and the fact that the center is really sharp pays dividends in a zoom like that. I don’t take it to shoot telephoto landscapes… I take it to give me the reach to isolate a subject but still take in a nice wide scene when I want.

This has gone on long enough (no criticism of the DA 18-135.) I'm going to start PMing those who are negligent in their duties. And where are all the lens hood aficionados? Is no one going to make fun of the dude? And then there's the "you need small unobtrusive prime lenses, preferably a GR3) for street photography dudes. Are they not going to get all critical? This place is falling apart. We have expectations.

I did nearly make the lens hood comment… but then I thought I’d be mellow. Lol

Perhaps the K-70 crowd are a more mellow sub-species of an already rare creature! If so then perhaps we should join this sect!

Oh I can see the down side already. "He only shoots a K-70, he doesn't know anything." Add in the DA 18-135 with no lens hood and you may as well just paint a target on your back.

Don't get me wrong, I know people who own K-70s, all fine people. I even know someone who married a K-70 shooter. It seems like a wonderful relationship. I'd recommend K70 shooters for anything.

Hey my son has a K70, but no 18-135. He uses a 18-55 mk1 and a DA 55-300!

That is way better than what I was using 15 years ago. That's a very workable kit, but, give him a 50 1.8 for Christmas. It's never too soon to get started understanding sub ƒ2 primes.

I have tried to get him to use my primes, but he refuses and says he likes his two zooms! To his credit, he gets very good photos, including BIF, and can make them look 3-D! He is too modest to show his work even though I encourage it. That’s okay, he still enjoys it and we can share with each other!
