Minimising your gear and maximising your IQ is the eternal struggle when traveling. My solution to this dilemma is twofold: For once-in-a-lifetime trips that involve flying, I take one one body and one or two lenses. Post-pandemic that has been the K5IIs and the 18-135mm + the 15mm Ltd. For roadtrips I would add the old screw-drive 18-250mm.
For visits to big cities like Paris, Berlin, Rome or Vienna, I take my Panasonic Lumix TZ/ZS 100, which has almost the IQ of my APSC Pentax gear, and charges the battery in the camera. With a universal adapter with two USB-ports, I can charge my phone and my camera at the same time.
For your group trip to Italy that would be my preferred solution.
Good luck with your choices and have a great trip!

I have a pro master travel charger that comes with different plates and it charges the D Li109 battery and a zillion others. If you want to travel light and cheap, picking up a used K-50 for less than $200 isn’t a terrible idea. Amazon has extra batteries for $14 each. I have been enjoying my K-50 with the DA* 16-50 SDM. The image quality is very good and I don’t think you’d be too upset if something happened to it.

Which model of the Pro Master do you have that charges the Pentax D-Li90 battery ? I like the suggestion as I do not like the idea of plugging my K3-iii into some random USB outlet in a hotel to charge the battery ....

Their website does not specify any for Pentax ?

Chargers and Power Supplies

Model 9176 looks like the most likely contender .. https://promaster.com/Product/9176

Amazon has horrible reviews of it :-)

OK -- after much thought -- I turned the KF around and sent it back unopened.

I am taking the K3-iii with my older Pentax-DA* 16-50mm F2.8ED PLM SDM AW converted to screw drive

To protect my K3-iii from bad USB charging so I can just take a charging cable -- I am getting one of these :

https://www.amazon.com/ADAM-elements-Universal-Adapter-Protector/dp/B0842L7J73/ref=sr_1_6?tag=pentaxforums-20&crid=1DVP51JSCFINQ&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.j6O6QiUJwSSIHgvghUAKgySvLu72YeosCfYQptKy1_4ihhig9qqF6QZKokUgin-g.cAqpq9daSlOk0pklsPWKGzWHS4VIikp0bAxwESHBRAk&dib_tag=se&keywords=european%2Busb%2Bcharger&qid=1708106023&refinements=p_n_feature_eleven_browse-bin%3A75574920011%2Cp_n_feature_thirteen_browse-bin%3A120948300011&rnid=120948276011&s=wireless&sprefix=european%2BUSB%2Caps%2C172&sr=1-6&th=1

This has the advantages of being a higher quality USB power block -- it can plug in just about anywhere in the world - is fuse protected -- AND the only USB charger I need to take for our phones and iPad mini's !!!

Thanks for everybody's help

I still have my Pentax-DA* 16-50mm F2.8ED PLM SDM AW lens gathering dust since I got the new Pentax-DA* 16-50mm F2.8 ED AL [IF] SDM (which I love)

The old SMC Pentax DA*16-45 is SDM but not PLM!

The PLM Motor is a very different motor used only in the great Telezoom:

I believe that the new 16-50mm f/2.8 lens is also equipped with a PLM motor, and that many here are praying that the 50-135 f/2.8 will get a similar upgrade.

The DA (no star) 16-45/4 is screwdrive. I think you meant to type 16-50?

The 16-50/2.8 has two versions, SDM and PLM. The PLM is larger and heavier, it has HD coatings, and is much more recent.

Yes, the star led to the mixup. The venerable non star DA16-45/4 is a wonderful lens, if in really good condition!
