In fact other retailers only have the 18-135 and the body only kits. It's the first time I've seen the Ricoh Imaging store advertise sets like this, except with flashes.

But I agree with you that it's a funny choice. Perhaps they're trying to clear stock of those lenses. The fact that you can't get a kit with the RE lens suggests to me that there might be a smaller lighter camera coming out to sit below the K-70 eventually. Contrary to what a lot of people believe, I think the K-S1 has sold as well as any other consumer Pentax in Japan, so I think they'll follow it up with something.
I really wanted the 18-55 (or 18-50 RE) + 55-300 PLM to be included as a kit option, especially since K-70 is the first camera to take advantage of such a lens for video considering it's hybrid focus in live view & the 55-300 PLM being the only lens supporting AF-C.

People are complaining about a K-30/50/S2 fading/failing with shutter count of 10K or even less; they should not be failing at 2K, but once you pass 5K, anything you get is "gravy".
I have 27000 on my Kr and would not think that the last 22000 were gravy. Actually I do not really used it the last two years since getting the K5iis but only 5000 from any camera is pathetic.

Um... I wouldn't have purchased a K-30 if I expected it to last till 5k with further performance in doubt! I'm currently at 30k, and my plan is to get to at least 50-60k before thinking of upgrading, and keeping it as a second body to shoot with actively after said upgrade. If it dies, it dies, but jeez, 5k sounds so pessimistic!

The D7200 tops the DXOmark ranking for APS-Cs
With all the recent 24MP Sony APS-C sensors (D7200/K-3/A6300 etc) - they are all very similar performers.

But if you want to nitpick the results, it all depends on where you look at the DxOMark curves for DR, S/N, colour sensitivity, not the simple score number. If your priority is high ISO [sports] or low ISO [landscape], for example, there may be useful 5-10% differences between D7200/A6300/K-3II at different points in the DxOMark result curves.

Ridiculous, IMO. I think Pentax should guarantee at least 50,000 shutter actuations on cameras such as the K-30, K-50, K-S2, K-70 etc.

That is very poor. I shoot around 600-800 ( sometimes 1000+) on a busy day at work so what you are saying is that a K-s2 would last me a few months........

I'd say that's not a fair comment as any consumer level camera body is probably a wrong choice for you, Eric.

A modest Pentax like the K-x has a specified shutter life of 100,000 actuations, the K-7 and K-5 are rated 100,000 too. The K-3 is rated for 200,000 shutter releases, and the more 'pro' K-1 has a rated shutter life of 300,000 releases.

I'd say the K-S2 would be somewhere between K-x and K-3.

But those shutter life numbers aren't a guarantee that every shutter will survive to 100,000 (or whatever) actuations. They are just an indicator of average expected lifespan. Some cameras will live to 1 million shutter actuations, some will die at 10,000, but if they camera is rated for 100k actuations, the average lifespan you might expect would be 100k.

Probably so.

I absolutely love my K-5 IIs, If it had a tilt/swivel screen I'd hunt down 2 or more bodies and be set for a few years to come.

Too bad the only other option in the Pentax line-up for Tilt screen is the K-1, which is far more than what I need for work. (Online auction catalogs.)

The K-s2 looks about perfect and I still might get one as they can be had for under $500 now. Maybe tack on a warranty for 2 years and send it in if the shutter fails....

Two iso 3200 samples that look very, very clean

Those are pretty nice for ISO 3200 in my book. The noise is present but soft.. detail remains fairly decent.

I wonder if this is only with (rather as a result of) the onboard JPG processing?

Yes this should be the warranty 50000 actuation none of this 1 yr garbage ,but 50000 clicks. This would be fair and square

That is the problem with basically one model of Pentax. I never had or used that model nor have I followed the problem. But all the other models that were lower than the flagship seemed to be able to go much longer than 5000 shots. I would be greatly upset if that is how long my camera lasted for.

Even if one model has a problem is no reason for someone to say that one should be satisfied with any model breaking down after little use?

That could mean for 30 years the way some people hardly have used the camera. That would place an excess burden on the company. There could be some *1DS still under warranty. There might still be some that would be under warranty 50 years in the future.

If a model fails with such little use then Pentax should step up and fix it beyond the one year up until a certain time period. That I would agree with for sure. Personally I am not familiar with the problem as it is a model(s) I never paid attention to.
