If find auto-exposure on my k-70 to behave as expected. I tend to use matrix metering. If the background is significantly brigther or darker than the subject, I can predict I need to use exposure compensation. If it does over-expose or under-expose slightly, the RAW files are great for making adjustments.

Regarding using auto-apperture AND auto-Iso: It shouldn't be expected of the camera to produce consistently good results when two of the three exposure elements are set to auto. It can't guess your artistic intentions. Eg: Less depth of field and less noise, vs more depth of field and more noise.

I programmed the front wheel to change Iso. Using the standard Iso button would be a pain.

Thats what you get trusting camera software ,just put your dial to M and watch your lightmeter ,no more bad surprises then lol
totally agree, use manual and learn exposure, in that light with the boat you'd want no more than 100 - 200 ISO

I've been happy with the lens and as it's still under warranty, I'll send it in for repair. I hate doing that, what with the horrific stories I read about Precision camera. Why can't Pentax do what Canon has done, and open up a brand new COMPANY-run repair center?

Rhetorical question, BTW. They don't have the money.

Edit: Jesus, this goes NOT well from the get-go. Went to Precision's website, selected "Lenses" for a category, but the "Model" dropdown list doesn't have the HD PENTAX-DA 55-300mmF4.5-6.3ED PLM WR RE! So I selected "Lens not listed" which takes you to a page where you can "Contact Us" so I told them about the missing lens... then I realized the "Contact Us" wasn't even on Precision's website, it's on Ricoh's. So now they have an email about "some lens not being in a dropdown list" and probably no clue WTF I'm talking about...
Somebody on this list recommended Advance Camera in Portland Oregon. A month or so ago I was careless when switching lenses and the lens and camera got stuck together. I sent them out to Advance who separated them successfully. My camera and lens were on their way back to me before Precision answered my initial e-mail. There are a ton of positive reviews about Advance on Facebook.

Hello there.

I have been using K-70 for couple of weeks and I have experienced some issues. In random the photos are over or mostly under exposured.

Two photos with same settings:

Anyone had the same problem?

Thanks

What are the other settings for those images? Do you have the raw images so that you can check those settings?

Try posting images normal size with exif intact - this way there really is no way we can say anything sensible about them...

FWIW, exif viewer works. They are both at ƒ/11, 1/200th, ISO 100

Hi there.

I don't have RAW image, was taking only JPEG.

Some image info from http://exif.regex.info:

Exposure: Auto exposure, Landscape, 1/200 sec, f/11, ISO 100
Metering Mode Multi-segment
Exposure Time 1/200
F Number 11.0
Auto Bracketing 0 EV

I read that there was some issues with aperture motor on K30/50 and also on some K70 cameras.

Could this be the case?

the 55-300 (newest version) has a fault - when unlocked there's no stop at 55mm - it goes all the way back to the locked position without the unlock button having to be pressed. If anyone has a quick fix for that I'd love to hear about it, else it goes back for repair.

You can send it back for "repair", but since there is no such stop in the lens there isn't much they can do to make the fix you want.

The stop is designed to click in and to keep the lens retracted when fully closed and not in use. It is not designed to serve as a stop at 55mm. There is a palpable notch at 55 as you zoom down which tells you when you are there. If you don't feel it then you might need to send it in for repair. But if you don't like that design aspect, you should return the lens to the dealer for a refund instead.
FWIW, my 55-300 PLM stops cleanly at 55mm when retracting. I have to press the button to retract it fully.

How new is your K-70? Shutter count? Here is a reference: K-70 Underexposed Photo Reports - PentaxForums.com

The photos are labeled "2700x1800" but they are actually only 160 pixels by 106 pixels; they look like 'thumbnails', not enough to learn anything from.
You would need to upload the original JPEG files from the camera for us to see anything useful at all from them.

Before doing this, try the suggestions to use center-weighted or multi metering modes (middle and top icons in camera menu screen 1 "AE Metering" suboption).

... Reading this article may help as well and shows examples of what you are seeing. Camera metering modes explained

.
Thanks a lot for this link

If you click on the image it will open new window with full size photo 2700x1800.
The images have also full EXIF info. I don't know why you get only 160x106?!
