What can an Intervalometer do, that composite modes can’t?

I want to get a wired remote, but for just a bit more I can get a cheap Intervalometer.
But I'm not sure if does anything the camera can't do already.
What (if anything) can an Intervalometer do, that the K-70's composite modes can’t?

Thanks

Here is a short list:
  • Allows free use of the various drive modes such as 2s delay, mirror lock-up, and bracketing along with interval shooting
  • An intervalometer may provide extended settings over the in-camera feature. For example, my wired remote supports unlimited number of exposures and timed "B" mode exposures up to 100 hours in one second increments.
  • One can use the wired intervalometer to drive the in-camera feature. Example: a series of 5 exposures at 1 minute interval every hour for 24 hours.

Just so long as you remember the wired remote on the K-70 uses a 3.5mm plug rather than the more common 2.5mm. If the remote / intervalometer doesn't come with the right sized plug you can buy a 2.5mm to 3.5mm plug adapter. A 3 pole adapter seems to work even though the Pentax remote has 4 poles - the 4th pole does not seem to be used.
