Actually, there is an announcement today that they are closing orders for the custom order KP J-Limited version as well, which is logical.
PENTAX KP J limited / ??????????? / ?? | RICOH IMAGING

Regarding J-Limited, that is something that is likely to feature in their CP+ presentations. They've already showed K-1 II and GR III custom models that could be launched officially, if only in Japan.

I think they should name the K-70 replacement K-5 III
Then the lineup would be K-1, K-3, and K-5

It wouldn't matter that it is a totally new camera from K-5 II. The K-3 III is all new.

That's actually a surprising but good idea. Why not.

Just clicked on that link. Interesting that they describe the KP as a compact "weatherproof" DSLR. Shouldn't this be weather resistant?

Ricoh Japan has sold out of them in Japan. And they had run out of silver ones months ago.
??????????? - ????? | RICOH IMAGING

Other retailers in Japan have stock but have been told they can't order more. It's a great camera, so I think anyone who wants one would be wise to get their order in while they can.

I guess the factory has moved on to making something else. Wonder what that could be . . .

I hope they'll come up with a KP replacement. It would be nice to have a retro cam in the product line. Lovely looking camera with a great performance.

When I visited Japan and went shopping for a camera there, I talked to staff and they told me KP had been a success and they got very few back on the 2nd hand market. I ended up buying a used K3ii for half of what a used KP would have cost - at that time there were tons of used K3 I and IIs on sale but few KPs. Now, Ricoh might have sligthly more thorough market research, but I would be surprised if they don't come up with something to replace the KP.

IMO they'll get to three models range:
- K70/KP replacement
- K3 range
- K1 range.

If the market goes completely full frame (which I don't expect), they can still use K2 range.

Yeah, Pentax does not make a weatherproof dslr.

This is my opinion of an ideal set of Pentax offerings.

K70 - this is the lowest priced camera, it should continue to be extremely competitive.
KPx - highly advanced, beautiful and compact. There are plenty of very good reviews from actual owners, should hold against mirror-less retro styled cameras.
K3x - the most advanced apsc dslr on the market.

And the FF dslr should have a:

KP FF - this should be a lower priced dslr. Compact, simple and tough, with retro style body.
K1x- advanced FF dslr

As you see I added a new compact retro style FF dslr. I think they are many that would appreciate a lower priced, smaller and lighter but tough FF. Even if it would have to sacrifice some features as the KP did. This would be a basic line up. So I hope they replace/add rather than discontinue. I know it’s easier to say than to do.

I'd hope too but a 5 cameras line-up is IMO a dream of the past.

Just my wild guess. If it will be a 5 camera product line, it will the k70 level, KP level, k3III, k-1 and I hope a 645 replacement. But I guess that'll be very heavy product line to maintain.

With a release schedule of one new camera every 2-3 years it would take a long time to flesh out a 5-camera line. Not only that, but Ooku posted in the last day or two that the KP has been discontinued at about the same time the K-3iii is going to be released, so a two- or three-camera line seems more likely.

Three cameras sounds reasonable:
-Field camera (K-1 line: high resolution FF sensor, Astrotracer as default, extremely rugged up to and including the tilt screen, no focus on speed)
-Action camera (K-3 line: high frame rate, compact body, fixed screen, AF improvements appear here first)
-Generalist/"amateur" camera. Midrange price, solid performance all around. Not sure if more of a K-90 or a KP2, or even a KP with 24MP full frame sensor, but I'm fairly sure it would continue to be APS-C.
