If you want a permanent solution, have you thought of superglue ?

Not a good thing to use around cameras. The vapors may craze the various clear plastic components.

The leather knob could be super-glued to the finger directly as a permanent extension. Problem solved.

That, of course, was my original intention.

I think all these posts about simply modifying the shutter button are missing the point. Besides, the modification was mentioned in the original post already. I think this is an important feature and it would be smart for Pentax to listen. I have occasional soft focus issues and never even thought about my finger hitting the camera body. I'm going to play around with this and see if it makes a difference for me. Thanks Kombivan!

Sugru! Conformable silicon that hardens and is pretty permanent.

So I purchased a roll of double sided tape and stuck on the inside of an old pair of work boots I had and then got my 3/8" leather hole punch and proceeded to punch some holes in the boot where the tape was as I had several cameras then removed the clear plastic from the other side of the double sided tape and stuck these on the shutter buttons on my cameras so my fingers would not contact the body of the camera when I depressed the button and it worked.
Thats a good trick. Never thought much of it before, but now that you mention it, the button is kind of to flush with the body i think. Never tried it but the Pentax KP looks to be a lot better there.
