K1 Store Display Model

My local camera store has a single K1 in stock at a good price, however it is the display model. I put in a call to ask them to check shutter count etc. The price difference is significant, about $500 CAD less than other places I have checked. Does anyone have advice about what to look for in this situation? Should I be wary of display models and shell out the full price for boxed new condition? Thanks!

I'd look for bumps, marks and scratches, on the external body as inside where the mirrors and so, the shutter count, and whatsoever a reasonable warranty, if not a full one.

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Since you can view it in store, take a close look at the mirror for dust and or fingerprints, unlikely but I have seen that before. The viewfinder must be clear too.
Ask if it is a return, or has it been out of the shop.
What does your instinct say at the time you view it?
What is the store's reputation like?
Anything about them online?
As CapitanXeon says, what is the warranty?
Good luck

My DA*200 is store demo. I talked to a store clerk and she explained it's history, explained that it had never been out of the store or a salesman's sight, so no chance for abuse. That was good enough for me, that's what I'd ask about.

An ex-demo lens and a camera are completely different beasts...
In a lens, I would fear knocks the most.
In a camera I think the two things that could be more subject are the battery (if the camera is left with a dead battery for too long - but it can be replaced quite cheaply) and the shutter (if customers enjoy trigger-happiness with someone else's camera).

So, yeah, true shutter count and warranty conditions.

They confirmed it would have the manufacturer's warranty plus eligible for upgrading to their own extended warranty for an additional two years, which apparently includes a sensor clean and "lens calibration" each year (this sounds gimmicky to me). Shutter count is 192.

The $500 rebate seems reasonable, plus it has the full warranty. It has a very low shutter count !
About extended warranties .... my own opinion: could be gimmicky. Some will likely disagree though.
Of course, check for things which are already mentioned in previous posts.

The Pentax 2 year extended warrantee was under 18.00 USD and includes a free tune up for the camera during that time. (I think only one tune up/check up though.) Since it is on Pentax cardboard, i figure it is legit! For that little cash, it is cheap peace of mind for the purchase.

Someone will snap it up if it is a bargain. If the OP is serious why sit on it?, at least understand it won't stick around.

I recently kicked myself for not picking up a very good lens at a great price from a very reputable source. While mulling over it someone else made the decision and snapped it up.

Actually, the correct extended warranty for the K-1 is $99. The $18 extended warranty is for less expensive cameras.

I wouldn't hesitate. My Q10 two lens kit was a store demo from Adorama. I paid $129 with full new warranty. It still had the plastic on the screen and a shutter count below 250. They sound like they are going to stand behind it, I say go for it before someone else does!
