Like Sandy I have the 15-30 FA20mm and FA24mm, to me I just like the 24mm rendering and angle of view. You can't go too wrong with any of them. Keep in mind the size of the 15-30 if you plan on walking very far with it, along with a decent tripod and the K1 it isn't very hiker friendly. Another way might be the mighty A 15mm, rectilinear and fast enough. Manual focus is no real issue with such wide lenses although like the 15-30 you can't really use filters unless you spend lots of money on big filters and specialised filter holders. Good luck deciding.

As a real estate photographer, I've kept looking for the best UVA zoom in the K mount. The new DA* 11-18 is outstanding. I've been testing it for a few weeks, and it's impressively sharp and flare resistant. I plan to send it back, though- I don't need the speed or the corner-to-corner sharpness in my RE work, and I'd hesitate to haul its weight on a hike or a trip. The cost is a big factor, too. Used at 15mm on the K-1, it's the best wide zoom I've used yet. The only flaw that bothers me is barrel distortion. It's simple distortion to fix, but it's an issue.

My hate of barrel distortion is why I always come back to my Sigma EX 12-24 zoom. It's supremely slow, reaching only f4.5 at its widest. It's sharp enough, though no match for the new DA*. Flare can be a problem in long HDR exposures. But this old Sigma has almost no barrel distortion, even at its widest. These old lenses are bulky, but not heavy. They change hands for well under $500. They'd be useless for astro, and bokeh is hard to come by. But it's another choice, probably the best one for me.
I thought the 1st generation of sigma 12-24 was very soft ? 11-18 is a new lens in comparison yith this old EX so I guess price will go downwards with time.

Oh my goodness! I love you guys so much. This is where Pentax truly shines. Not just in lenses and cameras, but the people who use the system. So much passion and willingness to help.

Thank you all so sooo much for your suggestions. I will indeed take another look and trial out a DFA 15-30 (thanks to all suggesting this lens)

I’ll try a DA* 11-18 since it looks incredibly sharp and resolves like no other WA I’ve seen before (thank you acoufap)

and also the suggestion of using an already top-notch lens in portrait mode for panoramics never even crossed my mind! What a great idea (thank you Rnovo). I haven’t actually tried this ever before. Do you just use lightroom to stitch together? Can it be done in-camera?
The 11-18 is not full frame compatable. I have the 15-30 for my K1, and that's what you want.

If you are still looking, Irix 15 Blackstone is a really nice lens.

Does anyone know if Ricoh will focus on a (U)WA on the short term after releasing the FA85 next year? Or is it more likely that we have to wait another 2 years for that?

Well, there's one on the roadmap that was last updated in Feb 2019; http://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/japan/products/lens/images/K_Mount_Lens.pdf

My assumption, and take this with many grains of salt, is that such a lens is at least a year away. The rate of release for new lenses is so slow that I can't imagine it being any faster than that. If I were looking for an ultra-wide I would shop used or what's available brand new today and just see what happens. Especially buying used, you can't lose much value in the lens, even after whatever it is reaches consumers.

Yeah I'm keeping my eyes open for an FA20 (located in Europe) but it is hard to find one. I just missed one that somebody sold for 60 euro's two weeks ago!
He didn't realize its value until he sold it to somebody else on the local Ebay.

I saw what seemed like a good condition Sigma 17-35 DG sell on the 'bay for about $100 plus shipping a week or two ago. That lens reviews pretty well. There's also a Tamron flavor of 17-35, full frame, that seems alright. I really like my M 20 f4 although it wasn't nearly as cheap to pick up; I think I paid about $325 shipped for my copy. Just have to bid and hope for the best.

I just got a used da 12-24 to use both on my k3ii and k1ii... For ff it seems fine from 18mm up and that is plenty wide for me, perhaps a little under too since I usually crop to 5:4 aspect ratio. It was the best for value and performance, since I'm expecting to use both formats equally to their strengths.

Laowa 12/2.8
Seldom mentioned here, maybe due to avaliability.
More flare tolerant than the Irix 15, smaller but wider.
f2.8 and good IQ (for a UWA anyway)

Samyang 14/2.8
A good copy is very good (esp at f11), pretty flare tolerant (better than the Irix)
So so build quality, but with that, lighter weight.

K28/3.5
Best landscape 28mm (though also the larger of the Pentax 28mm)
Luminous city by
Pinholecam_01, on Flickr

K24/2.8
IMHO, really still ok on the K1
Small, f2.8 + 24mm is handy for landscapes as well as other shooting.

The advantage with the primes is always that they are modular, so one can always leave a focal length at home when there will be less situations that need it and enjoy the lower encumbrance.
The DFA 15-30 is a handful of primes or course.

It really depends whether you are interested in prime or zoom.
15-30 is a safe bet unless it is not wide enough

Everyone has a different set of experiences, depending on their gear. Ultra-wides (15 and shorter, in my view, though others have differing opinions) are fairly specialised lenses, I think, due to the distortion in the linear ones, and the fish-eye effect otherwise. I have the Irix Blackstone 15 (which is weather-sealed, BTW), the FA20, FA*24, FA31 Ltd, FA43 Ltd and D FA*50, all of which are useful in various situations. Surprisingly, I'm more and more finding myself shooting with the 50 and stitching the frames when I want a wider view.

Hi all,

I'd really appreciate it if someone would give me advice on the absolute best rendering wide-angle lens for landscape photography for my K-1 (preferably a full-frame lens). I now have my D-FA* 50 1.4 and want to only invest in the absolute best I can save up for. I'm looking at the HD Pentax-D FA 15-30mm F2.8 ED SDM WR but don't know if it's worth it. I'm not interested in auto-focus anyways since this will be for landscape photography so finely-adjusted slow photography will be the name of game I guess. Perhaps there's something in the vintage lenses by Pentax or other brands?

Any suggestions would be greatly, greatly appreciated

Much love.
David
Do you mean wide angle (24-35mm) or ultra wide angle (less than 24mm) as some here are supposing ?

For the first FA* 24 mm F2 or FA* 35mm F2.

For the second Irix 15mm F2.4 or Irix 11mm F4 or Soligor C/D 20mm F2.8.
