Well the perhaps I may just pick one up. It is the last lens I need for my APS-C Holy Trinity.
It's magnificent. As I said before, I can't imagine that HD coatings would make it sharper or a PLM motor would make it faster. It's the fastest, sharpest lens I own. Heavy, though. The weight really gets to me on long hikes.

I love my 50-135. But SDM is starting to fail and I made the screwdrive conversion last weekend. Optically is a great lens, bokeh is nice, I use it as a portrait lens and I'm very happy with it. A new PLM version, maybe with some updated optics, will be great, but I'm afraid it will be expensive too.

If you send it in for repairs, it's near-certain the technician will use a post-2014 SDM motor, but screw-drive is always a reliable (and free) option, too.

Multiple PLM motors seems to be possible from what other brands are doing. But whatever motor they use it will be a knockout lens because it already is, except for the SDM issue.

The 50-135 is one of my favorite lens, a plm update would be fantastic. I wouldn’t be able to afford for another 6 years and hits the used market though 😀.

A new 50-135 would be good selling point for Pentax imho, but first wide angle star lens please

The HD 15 Limited isn't wide enough? Or maybe you need weather resistance?

While I agree the DA*50-135 is sharp, and produces very nice images, I don't recall anyone else describing the AF as fast.

You really need to experience the AF speed of the new PLM lenses....

I last had the SDM motor replaced in mine in 2017 and that too failed. It was a Pentax authorized service center.

Anyway, I came here to report that I noticed B&H has knocked $350 USD off the 50-135. I wonder if they know something we don't about a refresh...

Well, then you've got a much bigger lens. The idea behind such a fast 50-135mm telephoto zoom lens with APS-C is to effectively give the same usage as a DFA 70-200mm f/2.8 lens on a FF camera, but in a much more compact package. A very good concept! That is the spirit in which I use mine and I love it. I'd much rather use this lens on my KP than to get the DFA 70-200mm f/2.8 for my K-1 II! In fact, I hope if a PLM version does come, and it probably will, that it will be the same design, indeed the same lens, because it is that good. When they replaced the SDM DA* 16-50mm f/2.8, the new PLM version came as a much larger lens! But in that case, it was needed to put in better optics for better performance. The DA* 50-135mm f/2.8 performance is just fine as is- the SDM AF is the ONLY problem!

Who else here would like to see Pentax upgrade the DA* 50-135mm f2.8 to a PLM focus system?

Indeed there's been a rumor of one for a while now. Whether Pentax delivers is another thing. The arrival of a second-gen 50-135 with either faster DC/PLM focusing is going to play a big role in whether I stick with Pentax or move to a mirrorless system at some point.

The 50-135 mm is selling for about $1200 on B&H brand new. Just imagine how much its going to cost with the new motor and whatever else they might do to it. Still I would love to have one !
