The KP looks small as hell and featurepacked, finally time to upgrade from my K-01?

One thing I really like about my k-01 is the size while not compromising on image quality, and any of pentax's smaller dslrs to date have never seemed like a true upgrade for me.

My main question is how much bigger is this thing compared to my k-01? And is it a massive enough upgrade for an amateur like myself to think about throwing caution to the wind and saving up for that beautiful camera?

Or is this camera way bigger than I think it is and camera folk just have huge hands?

The K-01 is a pretty small K-mount camera. Compares to my MESuper.

Camerasize Comparison

K-01:
Size (W x H x D)
121 x 79 x 59 mm (4.8 x 3.1 x 2.3 in.)

KP - but remember the shoulders are low. The prism is the H dimension.
Size (W x H x D)
131.5 x 101 x 76 mm

So maybe 10mm per dimension.

That's pretty darn small. I knew the prism was gonna add quite a bit of vertical space there.

Play with the views on camerasize. The most revealing is top view with K-01 in front. Compare KP vs. K-01 to K-3 vs. K-01. KP is small, but K-01 is really small.

Seems like a hiking camera to me. Small, like the ZX-60. I'm so tempted.

Yeah I know the k-01 is reallly tiny, but I don't expect to ever get another k-mount camera at that size for a long while.

K-02 where?

I think KP is the K-02. I'm this close to ordering it.

I'd have to save quite a bit to get it but this seems like the perfect upgrade for me. I will continue using my k-01 as a more discreet camera though, especially with the DA 40. No one takes the yellow brick seriously

Given the control set is so close to the K-01 it would be a near-seamless upgrade. I have a K-01 for my DA Limiteds and a K-1 for everything else so I have no reasonable (or even unreasonable) justification for getting a KP. Yeah, street or party candid is fun with K-01. People can laugh at our cameras all day long. I don't care.

Good luck on your saving. A $20 bill in an envelope every Friday (or 3 $1 nightly) until Black Friday ought to work.

Well I just think the viewfinder is the Pentax answer to an EVF.

I have to rake leaves. Then I'm making a list of things I don't use. If I get to $1,000 in my PayPal account I'm in. Otherwise it will be baloney sandwiches for lunch, no Thursday afternoon beers and the $20 a week trick. I've done that before.

Do it and don't look back. On all accounts it is going to be an excellent near flagship well styled crop camera. Then again I should talk I sure know how to spend money.

I have to disagree. The K-S1 was the K-02. The KP is the K-03.

(Or maybe the KP is the K-04 and the "Smurf" was the K-02, coming out 18 months after the original K-01, right on schedule for a successor. Commence lengthy, bitter argument about the semantics of "successor" and "replacement" in the Pentax lineup. )

(and I think I know where my Christmas bonus is going...)

If small size matters the OP might want to check out the K-S2.

Compare camera dimensions side by side

I bought the K-S2 to replace my K-5 and K-01 and couldn't be happier.
The flip out display is nice, but I would prefer that it had the tilt out/up/down display like on the KP and my MX-1.

After looking at that size comparator website, along with looking at the dimensions, can someone explain to me why everyone is calling the kp compact?

Its roughly the same size as the k-3
