This is 6400 at 1/25 second that I took earlier this morning. I will replace or augment it later, but it is an untouched JPG with "P" setting using the new 55-300 PLM lens. This could be a beautiful friendship.

Wow, I want this KP now with that lens. Could be the best traveling package.

I love the idea of the three grip sizes. Very unique! I'm ok with the screw, since the design, though sleek, with those knobs etc sort of has a somewhat old fashioned sturdy nuts-and-bolts look anyway, and the screw is recessed. The medium size would be good with most zoom lenses, while the large might serve better for large size lenses and docks with the optional battery grip. The small one appears to be ideal for the compact Limited primes. And these particular side view shots, especially with the small grip, reveal a very slim overall design!

The small grip is attached to the camera in the box.

Thanks for the link, if they had included something like that in the hand grip colour, that would have been great. I forgot to mention the hand grip material feels very good sort of rubbery.
Thanks for the reply. I will be using the small grip on mine primarily I think.

I think this is not only about the ergonomics. Think of offering golden grips that would attract some Arabian sheiks. Or wooden stylish one for hipsters. I see here an endless possibilities to extend the target group for this camera

Bought the 55-300 PLM with my KP, it is super quick focusing, silent and has excellent IQ, I highly recommend this lens.

Can the camera be used without the grip at all?

What does it look like without?

I ask thinking about my old Spotmatic/K1000 and the way it looked / felt in the hand without a grip at all.

No, it cannot. There is a photo on this page: Hands-on with Ricoh's compact Pentax KP - InternetPhotographyClasses.com

Have Ricoh missed a trick with the battery grip? Maybe something could be included in the grip to augment the camera performance.

The compact size of the KP is one of the main reasons I got one, so I thought I would be happy to leave the small grip on it. After experimenting with the three grips included with the camera, I decided the middle one was the best choice for me. The largest would be best with long, heavy lens, but I think the middle one is a good compromise that still maintains the compact size of the camera but provides a good "hold" on things.

Middle one for me, too. I have fairly small hands, but I wanted just a bit more curve for when I grab the camera to pick it up.

I actually liked the minimal grip on my K-01, so I expect I'll stick with the small one on the KP with small primes. We'll see.
I can only imagine using the big grip if I get the battery grip for event shooting with f/2.8 zooms.

I would imagine the middle size grip for using lenses the size and weight of the 31 and 77
