That threw me at first because I use focus peaking all the time and never experienced that. Then I looked into it and noted that there are two focus peaking settings. One is "highlight edge" and the other is "extract edge." Apparently I use the former while you had selected the latter. FWIW, I find "highlight edge" to be very useful; you might want to look into it.
That was the first time I have seen peaking work that way. Thank you for the info.

White-headed pigeon. I think this is a female or juvenile, going by the grey feathers on the breast. KP + DA 55-300 PLM at 260mm.

This species is mainly found in Queensland and New South Wales. Although it is spreading into eastern Victoria, it is a rare visitor this far south (South Gippsland is the southernmost part of mainland Australia). This capture is the more special because the species is described by Morcombe as "one of the shyest and wariest of pigeons".

Very nice- I would have thought in Arkansas, as they look more like "razorbacks" (ha ha).

Very nice, and with fine green color. I still like my old DA 55-300mm WR. Smooth bokeh too for such a lens. Amazing what people are getting with these "cheap" non- * Pentax lenses!

A few I really liked from today's hike. The first comfortably warm day of the year.
