Sunset last night. The weather is changing, and it’s supposed to rain tonight. But last night the sky was spectacular, I don’t think I did it justice at all.

I know, sunrises and sunsets are easy and probably a cliche but I love them and never tire of taking pictures of them. They are pretty and remind me that the world around me is filled with pretty places and awesome views - including the Arizona Sonoran desert.
I like these a lot, especially the reflection on the back window. Makes me wish I was out there, too.

I have not compared the non-PLM and PLM versions of the DA 55-300. Some years ago I looked at scores of images of the non-PLM version on flickr years ago and I couldn't find anything that suggested that the lens would suit my needs. But my needs were different than most people who buy these lenses. I wanted a high quality compact telephoto lens for landscape photography, the PLM version has been a godsend for that. It's superb in the 55 to 150 range where I'm most likely to use it. At the longer end of the lens it's not as sharp and doesn't come close to matching professional lenses lenses like the DA* 300. The non-PLM has similar issues, but I doubt there's a huge difference at the long end between either lens — although the accuracy of the focusing on the PLM is a real plus. The HD coatings of the PLM are another plus — great color and contrast — but there is an HD version of the non-PLM version as well.

Here's another landscape with the 55-300 PLM:
Thanks for the reply, Greg. I know what I want to do, I just need to save for it.

I'm quite happy with my non-PLM 55-300 and since switching from K5ii to K
P the speed and accuracy of its focus has improved significantly

Thanks, Tim. It will be some time before I would move on a different lens. I guess I should take the time to give my existing one a good workout before abandoning it.

Try switching to spot focus (if you don't already)

I usually do. I'm not unhappy with the results I have gotten with the non-PLM lens, but I have not used it yet with the KP. I just need to get out more, but the weather and other responsibilities have not cooperated.

Just as a test, I went for a walk this afternoon to get some DA 55-300 shots with the KP. These were hand held, shot in raw, only reduced size in pp. What do you think? 1st and 2nd at 55mm; 3rd and 4th at 300mm. Maybe should have shot a few at intermediate fl.

My first real outing with my new KP, a Christmas present to myself, I've never had a great opportunity to really put it through its paces until today.

Here are a couple from the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area, Kleinfeltersville, Pennsylvania, depicting the annual snow geese migration here.

cobbu2, I like your two photos, either would make a good 1000 piece crossword puzzle.

Thanks! This scene was stunning to witness, to see tens of thousands of birds launch in one wave was truly amazing, I’ve never seen anything like it. The visitors center estimated over 90,000 migrating snow geese on the lake that day.
