I don’t know where to put this. So simply put it here in this thread because the two captures are made with KP.
Something I wanted to try some time now. Yesterday I took both lenses with me. Erected my travel tripod in front of a tree in a field.
KP fixed to attach both lenses DA15 and DA*11-18@15 after the other. Because DA15 shows it's strength at f/8 I dialed in f/8 at ISO100.
Between the shots brightness of overall light changed a little bit. So I got exposure time 1/80 for the DA15 capture and 1/50 for the DA*11-18@15. 15mm is shown as 16mm for the DA*11-18 because 15 is not available for exif documentation. The images show the same angles of view - so I think this fits.
I used autofocus. Focus on the stem of the tree. Nearly no wind. Light from right side behind me.
Postprocessing in Capture One Pro 20 - exactly the same parameters. No crop. No distortion correction. No CA correction.
KP • DA15 KP • DA*11-18
At first sight both images look the same - no wonder at internet size, I guess. What I can see is that both images show similar rendering. The DA*11-18 image may be slightly more neutral. At 100% they also show similar sharpness in the center - not scientifically measured.
But when I flip between both images, massive distortion of the DA15 image becomes apparent. Looks like the pop effect of projected analog slides when they get warmed up by the projector lamp’s heat. Here's my first animated GIF - was easier to create than I thought using GIMP ...
Now let's have a look at the lower part of the image near the border. Same crop area at 100% ...
KP • DA15 KP • DA*11-18
I'd say here the famous field curvature of the DA15 visibly leads to unsharp areas. DA*11-18 shows much better detail although the grass stands significantly in front of the tree.
Of course this isn't a scientific test. But it shows something that can be important depending on size of presentation.
