They are remarkable and not just because they are exceptionally cute. All marsupials are remarkable, for one thing. It's actually a great strategy to raise the young in a pouch - doesn't take up all that internal space for an embryo to develop and allows the young a more gradual transition. And the koala's particular superpower is digestion. To survive on a diet of eucalyptus leaves - full of toxins and with meagre nutrients - requires a special digestive system and a slow metabolism (they rest and sleep for 18-22 hours/day). I could go on ... but more interesting facts here:

Once abundant, koalas are now endangered, especially the northern koalas in New South Wales and Queensland. Koalas were decimated by hunting (for fur) until the 1920s and continue to suffer from habitat loss (land clearing, logging, fragmentation, urbanisation and severe and frequent bushfilres). The numbers of southern koalas in Victoria and South Australia have recovered (in fact there are excessive and unsustainable concentrations in some areas), but mostly with highly inbred animals descended from a handful relocated to islands in the 1920s. The only really intact indigenous population of southern koalas is the Strzelecki koala in our area, South Gippsland in southern Victoria (
The Significance of the Strzelecki Koala - Friends of the Earth Melbourne). There are lots of community efforts to save the Strzelecki koala, but unfortunately governments are doing little to conserve them (particularly by allowing continued heavy logging of native forests). There may be only 1500-2000 Strzelecki koalas left.
So, while all koalas are special, the girl in this photo is particularly so!
