An Interesting Size Comparison

With all the talk about the size and handling of the KP, I thought it might be interesting to do a side by side comparison to my old favorite. I know the two lenses are not the same size and not a good comparison but they are pretty close in effective focal length and IQ.

I think the old LX should be proud of the young 'un!

The screen on that LX is tiny. What were they thinking?

I want the film advance lever brought back as an emergency charger handle for when your battery goes flat in the field.Three turns of the crank and you could fire off another shot.

Great looking pair! It does show how small the KP is!

The full-frame LX has such an enveloping viewfinder that draws you into the scene, but the mirror box appears much smaller than the KP in the comparison. Please give me a digital back for my LX. I can happily live without IS.

Happy to oblige with the obvious comment!

I do like the comparison. There are enough similarities to make me think that Ricoh could have had an LX sitting in front of them during the design meetings.

It would be great if they could reduce the height of the camera in future to make the profile more similar to the LX. Some people would complain about the hold, but I'd like it.

I think the "prism" is so big compared to the LX because it's also housing a flash and the mechanism to raise it. I think there was a good case to be made for leaving the flash out on this model. But I suppose Ricoh did their marketing homework and decided otherwise.

I agree lots of LX, Program Plus, Super Program and K1000 design cues on the KP. The prism on the LX isn't as pointed as the KP but on a K1000 is a lot more pointed almost more like a KP. I don't think the KP is a straight up retro revival but clearly draws on a lot of cues from Pentax cameras back in the day. Really is a sharp looking camera!

I like the look of the KP but the size is really pretty close to a K-3.
The difference in weight is most likely due to the battery size difference.
  • Pentax K-3 and Pentax KP are the same width (131.5 mm) and 1% (1 mm) shorter than Pentax KP.
  • Pentax K-3 is 2% (1.5 mm) thicker than Pentax KP.
  • Pentax K-3 [800 g] weights 14% (97 grams) more than Pentax KP [703 g] (*inc. batteries and memory card).

The height figure is deceptive because of the prism. KP is noticeably shorter at the shoulders, but has the peaked prism. KP also is thinner, but has the protruding eyepiece and screen frame versus K-3, which are deceptive when simply comparing dimensions.

KP looks unbalanced in comparison - left side chopped off - but I understand the reasons for the style anyway.

It really isn't as off balanced as many current cameras. I do know what you mean though many modern cameras aesthetically are not balanced. One side is a HUGE grip and the other side is very small.

Amen to this the KP holds much like a 35mm film camera.

Again, don't be fooled by the height of the prism and the front to back depth, which includes the protruding eyepiece and articulated screen depth. The actual body is small and thin, like an LX.
