I had my KP since end of Feb. I just got back from Rome, and noticed the appears of very tiny spots in some shots with sky in them. Having first cleaned the lenses, spots still remained in test photos. Assuming it was just sensor dust, I used a Giotto's large size blaster to remove the dust from the sensor and the very few larger spots were successfully removed (used focal length of 70-100 mm, f/8 to f/40 and unfocused shots of the clear blue sky at ISO 100). However there were still very many tiny, equal-sized dots with a halo-like ring around them, scattered everywhere on the field and more clearly visible from f/22-f/40 as you would expect. They would not come off with the blower, despite repeated blower treatments and retest shots.
When magnified,
they all were all uniform size dots with identical appearance; each one had a small dark center surrounded by a perfectly round halo. After speaking with the Pentax support representative, he suspected that possibly some shutter oil may have splattered onto the sensor, and instructed me to send the KP to Pentax (Precision Camera) for them to inspect, diagnose and clean.
I'm putting this out there in case other KP owners find they have similar situation with non-dust spots on their pictures that aren't going away with just air blowing. Being it's still under warranty I wasn't about to attempt any sensor cleaning on my own on a camera this new. I'm disappointed that I will be without it for a time until it's back.
On a positive note, the pictures taken in Rome/Venice came out incredible! The vivid, natural color rendering, along with the saturation and nuance of this camera are worth the price to me. A vast improvement over the K-50 in IQ. The sharpness and detail it captured was immediately noticeable as was the perfect balanced exposure in nearly every shot. Pictures ranged from ambient lit churches like St. Peter's, to outdoor venues like the Colosseum.I found there was often no tweaking needed in PP for the vast majority of pictures (other than the ones needing the spots removed) I was using the Pentax smc 18-135mm lens. I really enjoy using this camera, it is an awesome tool.
