Moving from K5 to KP after a microwave event :)

Last summer, all my little family went for vacation in our new, small, travel trailer. To keep my K5 in a safe place, I put it, with the spare lens inside the microwave.
At supper time, I was outside with my kids cooking the fishes, and my wife, inside the trailer making the rice. She needed a timer for that and thought about the microwave.
And voilà, wrong button! After a 5 minutes journey inside a microwave, this is what a K5 looks like.
After that, I locked the microwave and bought a Silver KP.

That is crazy, so sorry about the camera! Did it catch on fire?

Oh my... I've never seen anything like that!

Sad to say, I believe this may be outside of warranty

C'mon, Ricoh, it's about time you made our cameras microwave proof! ...

Can I ask, did the rice at least come out OK?

Welcome to the forums - looking forward to seeing how you get on with the KP!

Looks like you did a number on those lenses too!
A very good reason to "upgrade" !

Ahh, man, that's bad news. And the lenses, too. Hope the new KP serves you well!

Well, welcome to Pentax Forums. Sorry you had to introduce yourself with a disheartening story.

On the other hand, there seems to be some positives:
- It looks like you have experience in cooking your images. I guess you don't need any post-processing software.
- You could send the camera to Ricoh as a contribution to their environmental testing program.
- You could give your kids the lens elements and they could experiment with magnifiers in the sun.
(Just kidding).

Welcome again.

- Craig

Welcome aboard. Ouch comes to mind.

I do have to admit I smiled a bit at your misfortune. I have a foible involving a Tamron 300mm F2.8 lens. In today's money that is almost 2 K1's.

When the kids were small we had a pop-up camper and took some epic vacations in it. Inexpensive way to travel. One trip was 4 1/2 weeks and covered over 9,000 miles (14,500km).

I would never throw that out. It would occupy a position of honor on a shelf in my house. A museum of cameras that met untimely ends would be a pretty interesting place to visit.

Did it kill the microwave too? Metal in microwaves is never a good thing.

That was the point at which I said "Naaah, this ain't ending well."

So sorry for your loss. But one could see the inevitable happening.

That was funny, there were no sparks or fire in the microwave, only a really bad smell. (That’s why I left the camera and everything else in the waste trash.)
The only thing I can say, is the rice was well cooked!
When we returned home, I called the insurance company and they told me that I could make a claim. That’s when I ended up with my new KP.

It would be more entertaining to send it to Precision and ask for a repair quote

Kudos to the insurers and the terms of your policy. That's great!!

Why does it sound like the worst idea ever to use the microwave like a safe ?

Thank you, VilainPapa, you've convinced me to stop casually storing my K-1 wedged under the wheel of my wife's pickup truck!

Hope you enjoy your KP.

This reminds me of a terrible nightmare I once had that involved preheating a conventional oven, and a cat.

Have always opened any oven ever since before hitting a switch of any kind.
