KP and AE L

Hello everyone I'm Ron; I am looking for information on my camera. I want to take a portrait at sunset. I want the sunset exposed and my wife exposed correctly.

On my K5 I could focus on the sunset ,push the AEL button, then focus on my wife, pop open the flash and both the sunst and my wife look beautiful.

On my KP when I pop open the flash, the exposure settings change.I have read everything I can find on the KP and have not found anything about this problem.

Does anyone have any suggestions or does it just not work like that on the KP ?

Thank you,

Ron

What exposure mode and what flash mode are you in? Whatever they may be, can you make sure that the KP is set exactly the same way the K5 was (if you still have it)?

I'm not too familiar with the particularities of P-TTL metering, but there are always some limitations to your exposure values whenever you use a flash. For instance, you can't set shutter speed faster than the flash sync speed, your range of usable aperture or ISO values will be limited if one or the other is locked in, and if ambient light is too bright or your subject is too far than it may be impossible to balance ambient exposure with flash exposure without the use of an ND filter or stronger flash, respectively.

At sunset, depending on the conditions and composition, the measured light level could vary wildly, so it's hard to say why the exposure values are changing, but it's worth keeping an eye on the set values before you pop the flash so you can ensure it's not out past the flash's workable limits.

You can assign AE-L to Fx1, Fx2, Fx3, or AF/AE-L. See p102 in the user manual.

-- or --

You can set exposure for the sunset in M mode, pop-up the flash, and take the picture using P-TTL auto flash.

A quick search through the pdf version of the KP user manual for "sunset" gives one entry ... P.57, slow-speed sync ... just the same as the K-5
