That's weird. Do you have the latest firmware 1.31 in the camera? Latest PENTAX KP Firmware Update : Software Downloads | RICOH IMAGING
Were you moving at the time? Or using any light source other than sunlight?

Stabilisation + electronic shutter ? Stabilisation while reading might be the case, try turning shake reduction of, could be the culprit

It's caused by movement while using ES. Depending on the camera, ES takes about 1/13 sec to expose and collect all the image data even with fastest shutter speed. Although every pixel is only exposed for the set shutter time, pixels at top of the sensor are exposed a significant fraction of a second before pixels at bottom of the sensor are exposed.

Any motion of the camera or subject while using ES will have distortions.

Shake reduction is off can't switch it on in ES mode

Lens correction is on also but also tried with it off same issue

Live view gives same result

An example...

Pentax K-1 mII Limited Silver and K500f4.5 plus 19mm extension at 1/750s and ISO 12800. Aperture unrecorded.

I think that 's it when I think back on taking those It did seem quite a bit longer to process. I don't use ES often but thought to use it for quieter shutter. I guess it gets exaggerated at the longer end as the other times I used it was indoors in a church in Italy at 18mm and no issues there

Interesting, I never thought it would be that slow to record, so the movements on long telephoto are exaggerated. The effects on the birds is really nice.

I have seen so strong barrel type distortion only with wide angle lens, most probably the ES and some movement can be the reason as it was already mentioned by "photoptimist" and "jcoss".
Otherwise this is a nice robin. Our robins never eat this type of balls, they like the sunflower seeds only .
What about the exposition time adjusted on the camera (independently from the 1/13 sec)?
