I'm REALLY liking my new K-3 III! All shot using my DA* 60-250 mounted on the Pentax HD 1.4X teleconverter. All are crops.

Yesterday was one of those days you want to forget, but that you will never forget...(2 dogs I don't own, but I loved, passed away )

I had to change my mind, so why not go out and shoot.
I got blessed...

View from the garden. The K3mkiii + the 50mm FA is a good combo, though critical focusing is a bit tricky at the short end of this lens, more luck with live view. (I don't think it's the body's fault, the lens is pretty dreamy, and the flowers and I float around a lot.)

I have seen and photographed harbor seals Phoca vitulina before

but it was on this trip to San Franscisco Bay that I first saw this coloration pattern
QuoteQuote:
Harbor seals are part of the true seal family. All true seals have short forelimbs, or flippers. They also lack external ear flaps and instead have a small hole (opening to the ear canal) on either side of their head.

Harbor seals weigh up to 285 pounds and measure up to 6 feet in length. Males are slightly larger than females, and seals in Alaska and the Pacific Ocean are generally larger than those found in the Atlantic Ocean.

Harbor seals have short, dog-like snouts. The color of each seal’s fur varies but there are two basic patterns: light tan, silver, or blue-gray with dark speckling or spots, and a dark background with light rings. Harbor seals molt (shed hair) in the mid to late summer for 1-2 months, spending more time out of the water.

I think you have found an example of leucism in the seal world. I've seen birds with varying amounts of lack of pigmentation in their feathers, and once saw an albino white tail deer. Leucism and Albinism are different, black spotting and lack of pink eyes indicates this is not an albino, at least from what I've learned. Nice catch!

as far as leucism goes

all of the Harbor Seals I was seeing in that area had the same coloration

as I understand it, that rules out your suspicions does it not
