Cool! It's probably a Yellow-footed Antechinus I think? I used to see Antechinus in the rainforest at Mount Glorious near Brisbane. One time, an Antechinus was on the side of a tree when he saw me, and ran around the other side of the tree trunk, then stopped as if to say "What? You're still there!".
As you say, the males generally only live until the next mating season, because they spend the mating season searching for females, fighting other males and mating (40 minutes at a time) and stop eating. Their immune system breaks down, they sicken and die, so no males until the next generation grows up. The females carry on alone. I once camped at Forest Top on the NSW/Queensland border during Antechinus mating season. It was hard to sleep with them scurrying around through the leaf litter all night!
