Cormorants on a small island in the Salish Sea

one is of the Brandt’s Cormorant variety note the blue

QuoteQuote:
Brandt’s cormorant gets their name from the German naturalist Johann Friedrich von Brandt who described the bird from specimens.

This species is black with a blue throat patch, surrounded by a border of dull cream. They have no crest, and their plumage is iridescent.

Brandt’s cormorant resides along the Pacific coast to the south of Alaska, breeding from southern British Columbia to Mexico. They can only be found along the Pacific coast. . . . Nests are made from seaweed and twigs on the ground.

the other I think is the double-crested cormorant note the orange face:

QuoteQuote:
The double-crested cormorant is most frequently spotted and more far-reaching than the other species and can be found inland. They range from Alaska, Newfoundland, New England, and south to the Bahamas.

They are all-dark with a golden sheen on their wings. They can be distinguished from other species by their orange face, as the two crests are hard to spot. They grow from 30 to 36 inches making them one of the largest cormorants.

anyone want to help with the identifications ?

You nailed the identifications. The cormorant with the blue gular pouch is the Brant's cormorant and the double-crested cormorant has the yellow/orangish gular pouch. Well, it is yellow on the outside anyway.

I'm also fond of the pelagic cormorants with their red faces.

could be but I don't think likely

dust removal set automatically every time I turn the camera on or off

more likely any problem is due to the fact I was photographing through the windshield of a moving SUV

I’m often surprised by the amount of “sticky” dust that can accumulate on a sensor, even with the dust removal setting. It usually shows up on cloudless sky shots, especially those that require some PP work, like your low-contrast shot here. Try shooting a few clear sky or blank wall shots (not through your windshield). You may find you need to clean your sensor, as I did after I prepared my last posting.

That's not sensor dust its something stuck on your sensor. The sensor dust removal only removes loosely attached dust particles nothing else.
Its time to invest in a Pentax Sensor Cleaning Kit 0-ICK1. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/618600-REG/Pentax_39357_O_ICK1_Image_...981& or take it to a shop and get it cleaned.

Try a rocket blower. That is usually enough.

Rocket blowers works for dust but not for sticky particles that can get on the sensor and stubbornly remain. I would try the rocket blower first though.

the K 3 III had a hair and " other stuff " noted visually on the sensor so I left that with my professional Photronic.biz

the K 3 II has some dust which I may try on my own

if Wolfe's Camera was still around I might had talked my way for some hands on lessons
