What about the DA 70/2.4 limited? Good portrait length, decently fast and very sharp.
This is an intriguing suggestion. I just did an hour and a half of research and like what I have seen and read. One reviewer on the Pentax Lens Review Forum, however, stands out for his criticism of the auto focus function of the lens. In 2015, Rah Zee said:

Focusing

Pro: - It's actually quite accurate WHEN it locks in.
- Manual focusing is a breeze and very accurate for such a tiny focusing ring. Bravo!

Cons: - AF is the loudest in ALL DLSRs I've ever had.
- On AF-C it hunts like crazy. This is by no means a sports lens, and given Pentax's specs, I wonder if they do have a true sports lens.
- There is a camera function to take a shot whenever the subject comes into (a predesignated) focus (point). Nikon does it well, Canon nails it every time. With this lens and camera, forget about it.
- AF-S gets slightly better results, but still far from reality in terms of speed.

He obviously did not have a K3III. Can anyone who has used this lens with a K3III weigh in please?

Cheers,
Loyd

I used it for Single in October 2021 and don't remember any focusing issues. And I was mainly using the K3 iii. The album from the month is here: Single in October 2021 | Flickr

The shots in post 2246 of the Brindle Pit were taken with the K3iii and 60-250. Yes, I had some focus misses because the dog was running and often towards me, but I like the lens a lot. I think it is on the camera more than my DA*300, but not nearly as often as my DFA 150-450 which is the best lens I own. Not the longest as I also have a DA560.

Based on the choices you list, I'd go with the fasted aperture indoors. My 16-50PLM is f2.8 and it can do well indoors but you don't have that one. Is the Tamron also a fast lens? If so, that may be good because of the versatile range. Finally, the 20-40 is no slouch either and it has a fast aperture wide open. Since I am familiar with my 20-40 I can say it takes good photos but the range 20-40 is not as versatile as something like a 17-50.

p.s. I wish I had a 150-450... Someone had one for sale out here for half price. I wish I had jumped at it...
Hi Lloyd,

I own the SMC Pentax DA* 1:2.8 16-50 ED AL (IF) SDM. This has been my best indoor lens to date. I agree with your take on the 20-40. The used Tamron is 2.8.

At the moment I am seriously considering the 70 vs the 77. Are you familiar with either of these?

By the way, the 150-450 is worth the expense.

Cheers,
Loyd

Hi Again Minimonster,

At the moment I am seriously considering the 70 or the 77. The forum awards the 70 a higher rating than the 77, but I am leaning toward the 77. It costs about 1100 Canadian. The 70 costs 600. The 85, which I really, really want, costs 2600!

Cheers,
Loyd

I haven't tried the 77 or new 85 but the M 85/2 is a great little lens.

I have both and I agree about the M 85/2! The 77 is just as nice as everyone says and AF is certainly nice to have on a modern body.
Both produce some CA in contrasty scenes like most older lenses but it's easy enough to fix in post that it's not a problem.
