Changes to V1.10
[Enhanced features]

[Electronic shutter] can be selected.
When [Electronic Shutter] is selected, a high-speed shutter of fastest speed 1/16000 sec. is supported.

Why the electronic shutter?

Is it to get rid of that mysterious mirror/shutter/horizon correction bounce?

Is there a desperate need for a 1/16000 second shutter speed?

Has someone found a problem in the mechanical shutter that leads to a shorter than expected life?

I'll never sleep again until I get the answers.

For me, less vibration, less shutter and mirror noise and in LV I can view the image while the camera is still capturing image. 1/16000 is a bonus.

Basically, to do the same task it performs on the K-1/K-1II and on the KP. If you don't know, then it is probably something you never needed.

1/16000s is not sth I will all the time obviously, but I will from time to time when shooting bracketed series in bright daylight.

Pentaxians: "Why? Why didn't they implement it?"
A while later, Pentax implemented said feature.
Pentaxians: "Why? Why did you do it?"

They always intended to add this feature. No, it's not because people noticed it's missing. It has nothing to do with needing 1/16000 either; that's there because the hardware supports it.
And if you wonder if it could be useful, the DPReview's ISO 100-800 studio samples would've been ultra-sharp if this feature was there from firmware 1.00.

Totally agree. Pentax nicely supports both the basic user, and the user who needs to stretch to the limits. Love this camera!

Enabling access to the electronic shutter on the K-3iii removes one of the "excuses" I was using for hanging on to the KP

Silent shooting at events?

PS Most latest sensors origin from mirrorless cameras. The need for video and other elements push the sensor development for mirrorless cameras into faster sensor read outs. The latest technology are the stacked sensors. I am sure that in a few years to come we will also see these type of sensors in Pentax cameras, they may not be needed because video has a lower priority, but there may be simply no other sensors around any more. If you have them in a camera, I appreciate to take benefit of its features. Silent very quick read out of the sensor, reduced banding, ...

I have no experience with electronic shutter. Can anyone explain how this works? Is it either electronic or mechanic shutter throughout the entire range of shutter speeds? If so, what would be the reasons to keep the mechanic shutter? Or does the electronic shutter only engage for speeds faster than 1/8000s? The documentation isn't very clear.

I know I could test myself (is it easy to deduce from the camera sound?), but I won't have the time to do the upgrade anytime soon, and I'm curious...
