Pentax K-3 III, smartphone and geotagging

Dear colleagues, please tell me if I understand correctly that Pentax K-3 III is capable of independently putting geotags on images, being connected via Bluetooth to a smartphone with location determination enabled?
That is, O-GPS is not needed anymore, is it true?

Yes. that is true. You need to use the Ricoh Image Sync app on the phone.

And it work rather well, too. If the camera is turned on, it uses some seconds to connect, but a ordinary GPS also use some time to fix the position.

Yes and it’s a fairly robust solution. You will still the GPS unit for Astrotracer but simple geotagging works from the smartphone.

Do any other Pentax cameras support this?

How does it affect battery life on the phone side?

Only the K3iii and Ricoh GRiii - so no, no other Pentax. It uses a bluetooth connection to transfer the data, and the K3iii is the first Pentax to have bluetooth.

You can either use geotagging with your smartphone or the O-GPS1 receiver.

The GPS-Antenna of your smartphone can consume 250mA (250ma x 3.7V = 0.925W).

Do you have a source for that? SiRFstart III consumes 62 mW during continuous operation. Typically GPS does not run continuously.

The source is now offline and not archived:

chip.de/ii/2506865617_c31c34b5c7.jpeg

You have to consider that not only the antenna (data receiving) but also real time data computing and interpreting is neccesary.

Another source states 425 mW (115 mA) for turning on GPS and getting a fix.
researchgate.net/figure/Power-consumption-of-GPS-module-for-turning-on-GPS-getting-a-fix-and-turning-off_fig1_280134964

And this study shows 20mA to 400mA:
https://www.researchgate.net/publication/332218348_Modeling_of_energy_consum...zation_systems

Others show 150 mA for GPS+GLONASS (common in current mobile phones).

What will be the power consumption of the GSM GPS Glonass tracker?
Thank you!
