K3 III Firmware 1.41 adds Astrotracer Type 3 officially

Ricoh has released the new firmware that adds Astrotracer Type 3 to the K-3 III.

This enables Astrotracer even without having GPS installed. It was released as a beta to some Japan users last November, but now it is open to all.

I assume some extra stability fixes, because it is not the 1.40 version that was opened as a beta.

Also includes:

Improved AF accuracy and stability during viewfinder shooting.
Improved stability for general performance.

I have installed the update and everything seems OK. I can't test the Astrotracer as it is snowing here right now.

It's worth looking at the instructions to understand the restrictions and method for using this feature.

If it's any good, it should be able to track the flakes!

Thanks for the heads-up.
I tested my DA* 60-250. No improvement in AF accuracy. Maybe it is because it is an old lens.

I'm going to go through my lenses all over again and test the focus adjustments.
So far with my D FA Macro, I had it set to +2 and can now leave it at 0 and it's perfect. Can't wait to test the Astrotracer function since I have 2 of the 3 "no restriction" lenses.

Hopefully this firmware behaves better with the 1.4x TC too. Id never felt that my lenses needed an AFFA until I had my 150-450 with the TC on and after an afternoon of shooting found hundreds of soft images. After calibration...that combo needed a -6.

The TC was uselessly soft with the 150-450 and K3iii for me also. It would be great if that was fixed!

Updated. Now I just need clear skies and opportunity to take pictures. Thanks for the heads-up Kobie!

"* When this update is done, you will not be able to restore back to version 1.31 or earlier."

I haven't read similar note earlier.

Whether that note has been present before Pentax doesn't let you downgrade your firmware once you've gone to a more recent version. I think the K10 did allow some movement so that people could force their DA * lenses to use the screw dirve, but otherwise I don't really know of backing down the firmware version.

Apparently those lenses have must have a more accurate focal length interface (or even distortion data) with the camera - at least that is the only reason, that I could imagine others would not fulfill and only work at the extremes.
