Orders for the new K3III Monochrome Matte Black version temporarily suspended

Due to unexpectedly high demand! It's sold out! Orders will resume when they can get a handle on the manufacturing.

This is a pattern with Pentax. The 645Z sold out in its first few months, and IIRC so did the K1.

So, the plusses and minuses of "niche". Sell-outs, so the company makes the planned gross and profit and gets a real world snapshot of the true demand; the rest of us groan and wait. Ha-ha.

IIRC, every 100% new product that Pentax has introduced since about 2016 has presold the first model run. I believe the DFA* 85/1.4 presold most of the second run as well.

But without knowing if it was 10,000 a 1,000 or 100 units sold it doesn’t really tell us much. Pretty much every new body and lens from all manufacturers is sold out in the beginning.

I wish camera manufacturers released sales numbers like automotive companies do with models of cars and trucks.

That is good news. Start conservative and produce the next batches with big smiles.
A Japanese company needs to apologize in such cases, but they will also feel happy.

Does this notice apply only to the Matte Black version, or both versions?

It must be the Matte Black. The Monochrome isn't even on sale yet.

Shops are taking pre-orders, they may have sold out from that alone.

This is a good example of a rumor. Is there a source for the sold out claim?

google translation from japan web shop:
"
We have received a lot more orders than expected, so we will temporarily suspend accepting new orders until we have a certain outlook for product supply. We deeply apologize for the inconvenience caused to customers who have been waiting for this product. We will let you know when we will resume accepting new orders as soon as it is confirmed.

Scheduled to be released on Friday, April 28, 2023
This product is not a limited quantity product, but it will be manufactured in small lots using the "workshop" manufacturing method that we have been telling you since 2022, and we will have time to procure special parts, so we will manufacture it all at once. Due to the limited number of units available, delivery may take some time. Please be aware in advance.
This product is a direct sales limited model "PENTAX K-3 Mark III Monochrome Matte Black Edition". Please note that the Ricoh Imaging Store does not handle regular models for the time being."

Pentax is doomed !!

Haha. I kinda like the workshop production. If it helps them save cost yet be capable of producing cameras as desired by customers

Seems like a good problem to have, not? I can't imagine a scenario where it is a bad thing to sell out your pre-orders within a few days of the announcement, but maybe I'm just not looking at this from the viewpoint of a Pentaxian turned Canonite...

(Certainly this is only a few thousand cameras at most -- nothing that would be worth one of the big brand's notice, but it is still a good thing for Pentax).

If they take too long, the excitement may dissipate.

Pre-orders are still open at Ricoh's site: https://pentax.eu/products/pentax-k-3-mark-iii-monochrome-dslr-camera

Also checked some retailers, some of those who carry Pentax accept pre-orders too.
