Okay, after more testing I'm getting comfortable with the 10D/540 combo. Here's what I've found to be helpful (keep in mind this is for shooting portraits, mostly head & shoulders stuff). In all cases I'm using P-TTL with flash on-camera, but bounced off of a Flip-It diffuser.

- use center-weighted or spot metering, depending on background
- use manual mode
- when using flash as main, underexpose ambient by one stop and use +0.5 FEC
- when using flash as fill, overexpose ambient by +0.5EV (what I've found to be my "normal" exposure for the K10D) and set FEC to between -1.5 & -3 depending on situation

Have you also tried locking the EV to the focus point in your menu on the custom settings-page2?

I did try that at one point early on but forgot about it during my tests. Has it been helpful to you?
