3-D Object printers...not ready for prime time but applications to photography...

could be quite interesting. Here is a link to a recent article in the LA Times about "printers" which actually take CAD designs and produce actual physical objects in plastic....basically there are machining devices yet are obviously moving into the realm of being a new type of home "printing" device:

3-D printers, or plastic extrusion machines that can make products, are poised to enter home electronics market - latimes.com

I find it interesting how these devices might move photography into a whole new area....think 3-D 360-degree viewable "scenes" or even something like true figural "portaits" rather than a current 2-D photos (especially portraits). Especially as there are no hacker level home devices in the $750 range to be had...

Is the holo-deck too far away after all?

yeah, but if the thing malfunctions and the holograms become real, it could be a bit tough to deal with....though depending on your tastes that might not be such a bad thing.
