..so wait, how many step down rings do you have???

More than enough

Here's what I currently have:

- DA 21mm and DA 70mm: 49-37 + 37-30.5. The DA 40mm's original hood is 30.5. The DA 70mm probably can use 49-28, but I'd like it to be consistent with the DA 40mm. I can not find 49-30.5 step down ring, so I have to do it in two steps. The 49-37 ring for the DA 21mm has to be very thin. If it were just 0.5mm thicker, it would cause vignetting.

- FA 50mm F/1.7 and F 28mm F/2.8: 49-28.

- Tamron 90mm macro F/2.8 and Sigma 50mm macro F/2.8: 55-37 + 37-30.5

- Vivitar 135mm Close-Focusing F/2.8: 62-49 + Pentax 49mm round metal hood.

This is a neat idea. I've put "stop down to 30.5" hoods on both 135 and 200 takumars, and both seem to work well, while being much more compact than the original hood. A similar set up did not work on my F35-70, unfortunately.

If you have to use a two step ring combination, try an over under setup to see if there is enough clearance to mount the rings without touching the glass.
