For the M 28, you may be able to use the slip-on square hood for the Super Tak 28mm f3.5 lens with the 49mm filter threads. There are several styles of Pentax hoods for 'Normal' Taks and Pentax lenses out there as well as aftermarket options. I personally use the Pentax/Takumar 'Normal" hoods on all my 50s except for the A f1.2.

Step down rings (49-28mm) work great. The lens attached to the body in the first photo is SMC-F 28mm, in the second photo is SMC-FA 50mm.

I have the M 28/3.5 and any 49mm screw-on rubber hood works very well.

I have an FA 50/1.4 and use exactly the same for it.

At $7 per lens they are excellent investments in IQ and modest protection.

Metal hoods take up more space and are fragile.

Here, take a look at my lens hoods. They fit perfectly and offer a lot of pretection against light from the side. As well as against Physical demolition.
The one on the M 3.5/28 is a standard hood, made for a normal 50mm lens. The one on the Pentax F is a hood for a 135-200m lens. No vigentting on both of them.

Soldbear's step-down 'hoods' look like a truly great idea. I prefer my hoods to be rigid plastic and round, for easier handling and such. But to find these is catch-as-catch-can. Failing that, I like S&W brand metal ones, which come in about any size and depth you may want.

Often, there are Nikon ones which may suit, (with a little deciphering of their part numbers and nomenclature) and those are very nice.

I just love Soldbear's set-ups!
They look cool!
I just have one question though, don't they cause slight vignetting?

Nope. I test with different sizes of step-down rings, and stop when there is any sight of vignetting or when the exposure starts to change.

The step-down rings work well with most prime lenses, but don't with zoom lenses.

Did you test at all apertures, such as f1.4 and f22?

At all apertures.

Also at min focusing distance, and at infinity.

I use the same method as S0ldBear on some of my lenses (step-downs to 30.5mm).
Actually, I was inspired by him.

I did some testing on a white wall a while ago and for my A 50mm/1.4 the edges at 1.4 were noticeably darker than without a hood. It got less when stopping down and was gone by 2.8.
It was not extreme though and I personally would not notice it when shooting, but depending on what you shoot and whether you mind a little more vignetting at large apertures or not (I don't), this may not be the best solution.

I also tested with a 3rd party 28mm/2.8 and could not see any vignetting at all, not even wide open.

Aha! So, that's the trick!
I really like these, specially all those film canister lens caps..

..so wait, how many step down rings do you have???
What if I wanted to do this but wouldn't want to buy all the step down rings to test it with?
Is there a way to determine the right ring immediately?
Is there some sort of rule of thumb?

Sorry if this looks like a highjack of the thread but it's still about lens hoods right but just using step down rings as hoods?
I hope the OP won't get offended..if yes, please delete this post.

You pose a valid question. I don't have any step-down rings and wouldn't have any use for the ones that didn't work.
