I think it's harsh to call that a ripoff. If they sell bootleg copies of DVD's or operating systems, that's a different matter. A 1/2 price or lower version of a $41 lens hood seems to me to be fair competition.

BTW, what do you think of your Chinese lens hood? I'm guessing that all these knock offs we're seeing on eBay all of a sudden are really the same item offered by different sellers.
I really meant knock off not ripoff. I had ripoff on my mind because I found out the seller lowered the price by $6.

The hood I bought has a different brand name than the other hoods. Other than that I don't think there is any difference. I really don't know how Pentax justifies charging $63 for a $2 piece of plastic.

Mine arrived this morning and I am quite happy with it. The bayonet clip is quite smooth and the can be mounted reverse for storage. The only real fault I can find is that when it clicks on it`s not quite as positive a click as the genuine Pentax item, but considering the price, with free postage, what the heck - go for it.

Hood arrived. Seems to match oem specs perfectly and fits like a glove. The build quality seems good, and "may" be identical to $45 pentax version.

I would buy this again if mine were damaged.

I too ordered that one. And then I found this one a few days later, which seems to be a little nicer.

The original linked allows for reverse mounting for storage, and does not mount to the threaded 58mm, but rather on the outside channel on the end of the lens.

The one you linked will mount via the threaded 58mm. Not that it is bad, it just mounts differently. Plus...that 58mm one you linked is a flower petal version which is typically used for wider lenses. Not that is it wrong or bad, but it will not be close to the original OEM-like version you are referring to.

Welcome to the forums slapnutz!
If you ordered the first one and not the one you posted a link to is you would be more satisfied with the first one because it is a copy of the original DA 55-300mm hood. It is a bayonet mount, meaning you don't have to screw it in or out..it is somewhat of a twist on and twist off feature (which is better).

Your linked hood is a screw type one and looks more like the one for the 18-55mm although your link is for a 58mm.
There is also a copy of the DA 18-55mm 52mm that is of bayonet mount kind too.

The bayonet mount lens hoods can be reverse mounted on the lens for storage as macloon has already pointed out.

GerryL, how can you tell that's a screw type hood? Just from the photo on ebay?

Yes Muse, from the photos and I already saw one of those before first hand.
What gives it away is that thing that they call a "rear locking ring".
It is the one that screws onto the filter thread of the 58mm lens, you can then turn the petal hood a full 360 degrees either way since it is the rear ring that threads to the lens filter thread mount and leaves the petal hood part to freely rotate.
It would seem though that they incorporated a lock on it since they now call it with a "rear locking ring" (maybe to prevent unwanted rotation).
If you have doubts, find another one like it and ask the seller.

Yup! If it's at par with the OEM, I'll order one myself!
..not that I want you guys to be the guinea pig but you beat us to the gun on purchasing one.
I just received mine from eBay Canada. It is made by JJC, model #LH-RBG. It is an exact copy of the hood that came with my DA 55-300mm, except that the Pentax hood is made from very slightly thicker plastic. I don't believe this is a significant issue. I have no hesitation in recommending the Chinese hood for its great price.

I got mine a few days ago. Haven't seen the Pentax hood, but this one does strike me as thin. Could break if impacted, well they all could, of course if hit hard enough. I'll try to keep that from happening! As stated, for the price (I paid $13.99, and I saw the price dropped a bit at one seller already) it sure beats paying $41 for the Pentax one.
