Can snyone tell me if $20 each is a good price for vivitar 283 flashes? I ran into a photographer here in town who has several he will sell for that price. Alas I have no experience whatsoever with these flashes, and very little with flashes in general. thanks.

$20 for a Vivitar 283 is a good deal. I should know as I've been watching a lot of them on Ebay and bought 3 for cca 25€ each. Some of them had additional equipment (sensor cable, filters). If I was after another one I'd pay $20.
Note that Vivitar 283 doesn't have swivel, doesn't work with rechargeable batteries and has a high trigger voltage (110-120V). Word on street is that Vivitar 283 made in vietnam has a low trigger voltage.

After making sure there is good contact I found out that Vivitar 283 works with rechargeable batteries very well.

Good price if they're in good condition and have a low voltage sync. Take a digital mutimeter and some fresh AAs with you to test the flashes.

Thanks for the replies. I live in a very small town and have known this photographer for years. I'm sure they will be in good shape. I'll have to check on the voltage though.
