I have a Manfrotto 055 and there is a really great strap available for these sold as an optional extra. (Manfrotto MSTRAP-1 Tripod Shoulder Strap MB MSTRAP-1 B&H Photo)

I carry mine in the trunk of my car. I try to use it, but it just gets annoying when walking through thick brush or rough trails. I have a spot to carry it on my camera bag, but it either ends up sliding out of position on the bag, or just being useless for me. In the time it takes to set it up, chances are that I would have missed the wildlife.

Mine came with a bag that has a shoulder strap. I usually leave it in the bag until I get to my spot where I need to set up. When hiking I uses a monopod instead.

In my rucksack - I have a small Velbon that is light and fits in there well - I've had it since my MX days. I also take three Tumble Tots bean bags (bought for the princely sum of £4.99) as an alternative, which serve well if there is something convenient to put them on.

I like the pack mule, mountain goat, or yak, depending on the conditions. LOL

I put Velcro strap around the legs and attach it to a carry strap from an old rifle bag.

My Slik Pro 700DX tripod came with a flimsy carry bag, which isn't long enough for anything but the tripod. I keep a Giotto MH 1300 ball-head attached to it permanently, which adds another five inches or so to the overall collapsed length. So I got a "tactical shotgun case" from CheaperThanDirt.com, selected because it was the right length. When I'm not carrying around the camera attached to the tripod by hand, I keep the tripod in that shotgun bag. Good, strong, abrasion resistant, "ballistic nylon" outer, soft but heat resistant inner (you know how that tripod barrel heats up with continuous use). About thirty bucks or so.

Oben Tripod sling. I unclip the bottom loops that goes around the legs, and then attach it around the top while I'm using the tripod.
