How do you guys carry your tripods in the field?

Just wondering: do you lug it around by hand, put it in a large pack, tie it to your ankles, what do you do with em if you're out in the field with one?

For longer distances, it goes in a backpack. For shorter distances and/or when I'm using it frequently I carry it by hand. It's about 6lbs and 27" collapsed.

Ah, carbon-fiber to the rescue! (My Feisol tripod is under 3lbs)

If I have my Kata R-102 backpack on (a long trek), it's in the supplied external holder. If I'm on a short hike, I might just extend one leg and use it as a (heavy) trekking pole. If space and weight are at a premium, I'll take my itty-bitty Novoflex BasicBall.

My Slik Pro 330DX came with a handy carrying bag. It's not exactly an outdoors tri-pod but it's all I have and I did plant it in the water.

I strap mine to my sling bag with ball bungees, it works great and is quick to take off when you need it.

A shoulder strap from a lens case though one tripod leg when I'm just carrying it. Port arms when loaded. I rarely use a tripod, though the monopod gets a fair bit of use.

My Proline came with a shoulder strapped bag so it's in that all the time around my back.

Some camera bags have a specific "through" side pocket for tripods.

I use the release lever on my tripod head to hang it from the strap of my Incase sling (by the hip where the strap connects to the bag) it works quite nice and is the solution I was looking for

I've been known to throw my tripod in a bag from a collapsible camp chair when I'm walking a great distance with it. There's even enough excess space for a sweater. Otherwise, I just carry it by hand.

Mine goes on the outside of my Think Tank Rotation 360 backpack.

One point I just learned, having done a 6-day course up on Hamilton Island last week - do NOT lay the tripod down on Whitehaven Beach - the pure white sand is like fine talc and gets into everything. If you want to put the tripod down somewhere (sand, mud, whatever), flick the legs open (no need to extend) and stand it on its feet.

Simple, and probably already known by everyone else here but me. I'd always just laid it down. But then I got to Whitehaven Beach......

By hand if I plan on using it. Often with the camera mounted on it.

Strapped to the side pocket of my Asolo backpack (converted to a camera bag with a Domke insert) when not in use. The tripod also has a carrying bag with a strap, but I prefer to attach it to my backpack.

Employ, or beg/borrow an assistant to carry it for you.

Generally I just carry it in one hand. I have a backpack for my dog, so he gets to carry most of my kit, the camera and usually half a dozen lenses. At some point I'll figure out a way to attach the tripod across his back and then he can carry that as well.

You mean you haven't yet got him trained to use the tripod as a crutch? Sheesh - get yourself a donkey, they can carry more....

Just kidding, of course

By the way - we have three donkeys....... I may have to train them to carry my gear when going walkabout.
