Remote control, what is this thing?

I found this in a thrift store, new in the box for $2 and figured it might be useful. It says Remote Control C Set on the box. There are two buttons on it, one has a remote stamped above it and the other has the three trees for different focal lengths I am guessing.

I pointed it at the front of my Kx and pressed both buttons, but nothing happened. Could just need a battery but before replacing that, I wondered if this remote is actually of any use.

The one thing you have to do on the camera is hit the timer button and switch to drive mode: "remote"

The Pentax Wireless Remote Control C will zoom and release the shutter after three seconds on select cameras. It works up to 15 feet in front of the camera and is made for all IQ Zoom and Efina advanced photo system cameras with remote capability.

I think all Pentax cameras respond to exactly the same "shutter release" IR code, so as long as you have the camera drive mode set to respond to remote shutter release, I suspect this will work just fine.

Don't expect the second button to do anything, though. As far as I know, on Pentax DSLRs, only remote shutter release is supported.

I tried both timer and remote modes, including pressing the shutter release half way for focus, aimed the remote at the camera but still nothing.

Anything I might be missing?

Turn on Live View, then (with remote shutter release OFF) hold the remote right in front of the lens and point the emitter at the camera. Watch the image of the LED in the Live View as you press the button on the remote. On most digital cameras, an infrared LED will be seen as glowing purple. You can try it with your TV remote too, for confirmation.

If you don't see anything, your thrift store remote may be simply kaput.

If you DO see it glow, then I don't know what the problem might be!

I think you might be missing the bit on page 300 of the K-x manual that describes Remote Control: Pentax Remote Control F (optional) ... in the Specs section, or perhaps some of the other pages (p134 on) citing setup and dependency settings required to be in force for remote shutter to work.

Fwiw: R.S on K-x works perfect with my USD3.27 remote from DealExtreme so can be a useful accessory to have in your kit -- but any unit used, whatever brand incl. Pentax, has to be a K-x compatible version I'd say.

.R.

That's something I didn't know. I tried that and there was no purple light. Finally got around to opening it and checking the battery; it was dead. Tried the live view again and the purple light was there.

I have read the manual cover to cover, but if it says that remote is not compatible I might have given up. Tracked down a new battery, set the drive to remote and it works fine.

Quicksand, I thought the same as you, they must all work on the same signal.

A hot electric cooktop burner will show as purple, too, for the same reason. It's weird.

Glad the remote ended up working out.
