For your adapter

We used to call em 'Reducer bushings.'

One like this oughtta do it: (You can also get like a set of five from manfrotto pretty cheap, but this is your size and all. )

Wimberley BS-100 3/8"-16 to 1/4"-20 Brass BS-100 B&H

Thanks Ratmagiclady. I thought perhaps that's what I needed but had to ask to be sure.

Here is one with a pic: GS5000 Gitzo 3/8" to 1/4-20 inch Reducer Adapter. That particular item maybe a bit on the expensive side with the fancy brand, but in any case the picture should help you to spot the right thing: this is basically a short piece which has 3/8" thread on the outside and 1/4" on the inside so that it can go on the 1/4" male thread on the tripod in effect transforming that to the usual 3/8". [edit: RML, you beat me to it, I see . I take this opportunity to point out that the screwdriver slot is an important feature to have so that the insert can be removed if it decides to be more attached the thread on the head than that on the legs. A drop of thread locking combound should help the insert to make the right choice.]

Thanks jolepp, but I knew what it did. After working in plumbing for years with my late husband, converting pipes kind of gives me knowledge about reducers.

It sure seems you did not need that explanation .

As price goes, PL, I'm not sure I'm not imagining this, but I may have recently seen/bought some at the home center. If so, I haven't found them yet. I'd figured I could drop one in an envelope and that'd be that, but they're obviously kinda small.

I came back to this thread because I want to know about Benro tipods. I have one in my wish list at KEH and not sure if this is a good one or not. In the photo of it, it looks quite sturdy, it's also brand new, comes with case and spike or flat rubber feet. It also has flip lever locks instead of the screws that are on my present tripod, the one with the creeping legs.

I don't think that the above model could be considered an equivalent at the Bogen/Manfrotto 3221WN.
If you take a look at that link:

The 058 is perfect for P&S and DSLR's (small).
While if you take a look here

Ideal for conventional or digital cameras, video cameras, medium format, and spotting scopes
So i think you should look at another model.

Note:
Eventually take a look even at the Feisol tripod.

My K-x is small. Mostly I'll be using the tripod to hold my long Samyang 100-500mm. And load capacity is : LOAD CAPACITY 8.8 lbs. I believe that's enough to hold my camera, and my big lens. Lens weights 3 lbs, my camera weights less than that, much less.

The ones in your links, I cannot afford, especially, the last link.

Also, all I wanted to know was what the other members here thought of the Benro name. I did not want one like the Bogen/Manfrotto that I had because it was too heavy to carry around.

Well, no one answered me about the brand Benro so I ordered that tripod. It's going back this week, well, actually next week since this is Friday. It's a piece of crap. I didn't even set it up and test with my expensive equipment. The legs are tiny around, and when I extended it, mashed down on the top, the legs splayed out; furthermore, it has round screw locks; looks like they'd be a problem after awhile shooting near salt water and sand/mud.

I found a bogen at my price level, I'm going to try to trade up with the Benro.

I've got a benro and it's anything but a piece of crap. No idea how you can make that judgment as you didn't even test it. Also those twist locks are weather sealed. Gitzo use twist locks too. There's three sizes, maybe you ordered one too small?

I tested it by taking it out of the box, pulling the legs out, and locking them in place, standing it on the floor and apply pressure to the top of the tripod. I wanted to see if it was sturdy enough to hold my camera and lens. It wasn't. The legs are about an inch around. And there is a link in my post, numbered 38 so you can see which one I got. Evidently, I bought a lesser model than you have.

I have a feisol 3401 w/ center column... it is a solid tripod and the center column is removable so it will go quite low. Also, I like the look of the vanguard tripods although I haven't used one myself.

Ok I see that you bought the cheapest smallest travel alu model tripod in the range, yet you wanted to support a 100-500 lens?

I've used a benro in the field a lot and it's never let me down, but I have their mid range carbon model. The twist locks you criticized have been flawless and survived sand and seawater numerous times with no effect.

Honestly I think this is a case of you ordering the wrong model in their range, I'd have looked at the C-1 or C-2 series.
