Vivitar DF-283

I know im not crazy but maybe its there but not active. I recently purchased a DF-283.

There is a Red widow on it that looks remarkably like an Ifra red reciever.

Can my K-x trigger that or do I need to obtain something that sits on the hotshoe?

I see in my camera settings wireless flash settings but cant seem to trigger it or set it up right.

The red window should be the Auto Focus Assist Lamp. In dark lighting conditions to help the camera auto-focus it shines a red grid or lines on the subject and it'll help the camera auto-focus.

I could be wrong though

That hack looks like it's for the *old* 283, not the new 'vivitar' '283' with a focus assist.
