Extension tubes - which to buy ?

Hi,

I'm looking to purchase extension tubes for my Pentax K-r. I`m looking for more affordable alternatives than the Pentax branded version.

I`ve seen a cheaper alternative to buying Pentax branded extension tubes, like those by Fotodiox .

However, I see that these don`t have any electrical contacts.

1) Without electrical contacts, do you need to have a manual aperture ring?
2) Without electrical contacts, TTL metering won`t work obviously - so how do you know what manual exposure to use?

If the above isn`t a good option for extension tubes, what other ones should I look at?

First and foremost, be weary of the uber cheap china brand tubes. Some are very reflective and shiny on the inside causing flare issues

for #1, yes you need an aperture ring

for #2, you get good at shooting the flash in manual mode. I do it 100% for ALL types of photography including macro. Its no different than the concept of shooting your camera in M mode.

I've a few cheap chinese tube sets and have not had trouble with internal reflections; Yeatzee is right of course they must be flat black inside. I think it'd be pretty hard to mess them up during manufacture as they are simple.

Here's an easy way to fool your camera into thinking all lenses are A type so P-TTL works:

I've noticed no downside to this mod. It is easy to do and easily reversible. I've done it on both K100D and K-x cameras.

Excellent presentation of the mod! This should be a sticky.
