Hi,

Can someone please recommend a good battery for K-5 that I can use as a spare?

Get the OEM Pentax battery- the cheap third party ones generally don't last as long, unfortunately.

Maybe, but the less cheap (but still much cheaper than OEM) are just fine. I've never been able to tell any difference.

I am with Adam, get the Pentax. If I had a 1300 dollar camera I would have no problem spending 37 bucks on a original battery.

Made by a third party, as they all are :-) Remember, this is the company that charges $30 for the little plastic piece around the viewfinder...

Just be sure you get your third party battery from a reputable vendor.
Third party batteries may come from the reject bin and with good reason. Having your battery leak, catch on fire or pop are not laughing matters.

Yes there are good ones.
Yes there are bad ones.
How much is your camera worth, should you choose poorly? 8)

Scare tactics. I don't recall having heard of any of these things happening with a camera battery. Only laptops and cell phones. The only risk with non-OEM batteries for your camera is that it may not have as long a life, and that's only with the really cheap ones. There was a really long thread about this issue here a while back. Some non-OEMs are actually better than the OEMs.

Adam - Can you provide a link to the OEM Pentax battery? There are just too many listings out there that is so confusing. Thanks

Thanks dgaies. It is listed for k-7, but I guess k-5 is fine too.

You're welcome. It's the exact same battery for both bodies (the D-LI90).

I just bought the "Pearstone" battery from B&H, we'll see how it goes. I will usually buy the 'real thing' but it has good user ratings and I resent paying the extortionist OEM prices for batteries on some devices. The Panasonic battery for my video cam costs $55, $110 for the extended! But there is no alternative I can find that anybody will vouch for. At least the Pentax OEM's border on reasonable.
