I mentioned it before. The best item over last year
is easily a slightly used Eizo 22 inch monitor.
Well it cost nothing because I needed a new monitor
for the work office.
I use it daily for work in text mode.
For photo work, it is in sRGB
With a color chart,a metre ruler and a steel picket fence
now I can really see what is going on with lenses, AF trim,
DOF, resolution, color, filters etc on my old M lenses and the IstDS and MX.
I rarely do pp, I just take lots of shots, use the bracket in the istds etc
cull in the camera and again in picasa. The istds stays in 3*jpg, about 3MPx.
There are other monitors new and old here and the Eizo is so far in front,
I don't use the others for photo.

An old strap that came with a ZX30, that served as a rear lens cap for a lens purchase, so it was essentially free. It has leather at the end of each side where it attaches to the nylon that goes through the eyes on the camera. Each one snaps closed and can hold an SD card Why don't they do something like that today?

OP reminded me to post this reply from another thread

Flat rubber bathtub drain stopper, used to remove a stuck filter from a lens. Use the palm to press and turn - no squeezing necessary

I think it cost $0.69.

Hi

A clean white tissue fresh from the pack. Held in front of the lens as a white balancer. Take a reading with it, it never fails. Nothing is cheaper !

Greetings

Rather of the extreme end of "cheap", but the most useful thing to me aside from my camera and lenses was when I got my Katzeye focusing screen (without optibrite or anything) and focusing screen shims. The Katzeye even without the split prism (which it does have) "pops" into focus just like the old 35mm Super Program I have wheras the stock screen simply fades in and out of focus so its super hard to clearly tell whats going on, its rather hard to explain the difference. The shims were the full set from Pentax parts so I could get the focus spot on. Now all my pictures with my old manual lenses I use are actually focused, which is rather critical.

Rubber bands ~ attach a flash bounce card or hold a plastic bag onto the camera as a raincoat.

Beanbag

DIY string monopod.
Use a short string and attach to the belt loop on jeans. I use a product that looks like Para cord, but is elastic and use the D-ring bolt that attaches the tripod mount. If you plan on using a bolt to attach the string to the camera, consider using nylon vs. metal, less opportunity to scratch something.

Thought I'd revive this thread as we have a LOT of new K-30 owners in our midst (Yeah!) and the recommendations on this thread might prove invaluable to them. I've learned a lot from the responses myself.
